Role Overview

Reporting to: Superintendent, Integrated Planning. The Principal Mine Engineer provides leadership and technical oversight for the Mine Engineering team and is accountable for the quality and delivery of Mine Engineering inputs across weekly, forecast, budget and annual planning horizons. The role ensures longer-range mine plans are translated into safe, practical and executable plans while maximizing asset value and supporting Red Dog’s production, financial, environmental and long-term business objectives.

 

Rotational Schedule will be 2 weeks on-site with 2 weeks off-site

Key Responsibilities

•    Lead, coach and develop the Mine Engineering team by establishing clear expectations, providing technical mentorship, managing performance and building team capability and succession. 
•    Provide overall accountability for Mine Engineering inputs to weekly, forecast, budget and annual planning processes, ensuring plans are accurate, timely, technically sound and aligned across planning horizons. 
•    Ensure mine sequencing, priorities and material movement plans support production, ore quality, stockpile and blending requirements while maintaining appropriate waste development and operational flexibility. 
•    Establish and maintain strong Mine Technical governance, including engineering standards, QA/QC, peer review, technical documentation and consistent application of engineering practices. 
•    Provide technical oversight across mine planning and execution, including sequencing, load and haul, drill & blast, dump development and other Mine Engineering activities. 
•    Ensure effective planning and governance of waste rock placement, dump development and mine construction activities, incorporating geotechnical, geochemical, environmental and permitting requirements. 
•    Lead analysis of mine performance and planning variances, identifying root causes, risks and opportunities and ensuring learnings are incorporated into future plans and decision making. 
•    Work collaboratively across Mine Operations, Geology, Geotechnical, Survey, Mine Systems, Projects and other site functions to identify constraints, evaluate trade-offs and support integrated operational decision making. 
•    Lead and support technical studies, improvement initiatives and implementation of new systems and technologies that improve safety, productivity, planning capability and cost performance. 
•    Contribute to annual budget, monthly forecast and business planning processes, including cost analysis, capital and resource requirements, and identification of business risks and opportunities. 
•    Provide technical leadership and support for mine construction, infrastructure, risk assessments and other projects or investigations impacting mine development and execution. 
•    Support the Superintendent, Integrated Planning by providing accurate Mine Engineering information, analysis and recommendations to enable integrated value-chain decision making. 
•    Provide leadership support and relief within the Integrated Planning and Mine Operations functions as required. 
•    Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

•    Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering or a related engineering discipline. 
•    Minimum ten (10) years of mining experience, including significant mine planning and technical services experience. 
•    Demonstrated experience leading, supervising or coordinating engineers and technical professionals. 
•    Strong technical background in open-pit mine planning and execution, with experience across areas such as drill & blast, load and haul, waste and dump development, mine construction and operational improvement. 
•    Experience with budgeting, forecasting, cost analysis and business planning. 
•    Strong understanding of engineering governance, QA/QC and technical risk management. 
•    Experience with mine planning software; Deswik experience is considered an asset. 
•    Advanced analytical, problem-solving and decision-making abilities with demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities. 
•    Proven leadership capability with a strong focus on coaching, mentoring and developing technical professionals. 
•    Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships across technical and operational teams.
