Principal Metallurgist

Teck Alaska Incorporated, Red Dog Operations, one of the world's largest producers of zinc concentrate, is recruiting for a Principal Metallurgist.

Reporting to the Operating Superintendent, the Principal Metallurgist is responsible for providing technical direction to the Mill Technical group and the Laboratories in a safe and efficient manner consistent with optimizing metallurgical performance, production and financial objectives of the Red Dog concentrator.

Rotation schedule will be two weeks on-site and two week off-site. 


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Protect the safety and health of employees by promoting safe working procedures and health programs in accordance with Company policy and appropriate regulations.
  • Assists with optimizing metallurgical performance by providing effective support to the operations group including forecasting circuit behavior, monitoring and analyzing the circuit’s performance and providing technical guidance to the mill operations group to ensure that the quality of concentrates and production objectives are met in a safe, environmentally responsible and cost effective manner.
  • Provide metallurgical, environmental and engineering expertise and support for Red Dog Operations including conducting studies related to new or future developments or opportunities relevant to Red Dog Operations.
  • Coordinates the preparation of the annual budget for the mill operation; monitors costs and explains variances; responsible for monitoring the performance of the mill with respect to costs, production and quality to ensure that production, quality and financial targets are met and provides input into the capital budget planning to ensure long-range operating objectives of the Red Dog Concentrator are met.
  • Ensure management is kept up to date on major process issues and project progress and that accurate, clear, and timely reports are prepared.
  • Maintain informed of developments in his/her field of expertise and interpret their significance in terms of opportunities for Red Dog Mine.
  • Develop the Mill technical staff in regards to their professional skills and standards.
  • May be asked to cover for the Operating Superintendent - Mill in his/her absence.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


  • Metallurgical, Mineral Processing or Chemical engineering degree is required
  • Minimum of ten (10) years senior level milling experience, including some exposure to base metal flotation
  • Experience leading and implementing projects that improve metallurgical performance and/or operating costs
  • Capable of working with all levels of the organization and in a team environment.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advanced computer skills, particularly spreadsheet, word processing and presentation applications
  • Advanced analytical, problem solving and decision making abilities
  • Proven and exemplary leadership skills
