Reporting to the Superintendent, Integrated Planning, the Principal Geologist is responsible for overseeing the Geology department in all aspects. This includes budgeting and budget forecasting, recruiting, projects, reconciliation of mineral reserves through to hauled material, liaison with strategic planning concerning exploration, mineral resource and reserve updates, and long-term planning, and ensuring effective communication with mine planning, geotechnical engineers, and metallurgists

 

Schedule is an even rotation; 2 weeks on-site, 2 weeks off-site

Responsibilities:

•    Protect the safety and health of employees by promoting safe working procedures and health programs, following Teck Alaska policy and appropriate regulations
•    Review strategic plans for geological exploration and resource development
•    Coordinate and ensure the successful planning and execution of drill programs
•    Responsible for ensuring the regular upkeep of geologic models informed by drillhole data and pit mapping
•    Review work carried out to identify and capture critical geologic structures that could cause instability and hazards
•    Assist in the development of drill programs to collect the required structural data
•    Maintain communication with mine engineering, geotechnical, and metallurgy to ensure that all relevant parameters are included in geologic models
•    Lead and oversee all mine geology projects to ensure the quality and quantity of work being performed meet the operation’s needs
•    Initiate and direct special projects, as required
•    Provide effective geology services and ensure maximum skill utilization by developing staff, identifying training needs, evaluating performance, and maintaining records.
•    Mentor and develop senior and junior geologists, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth
•    Communicate effectively with operations, geology, and technical groups based in Vancouver and liaise with outside agencies to meet the operation’s overall objectives
•    Ensure that all geology services provided comply with environmental regulations and programs
•    Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

•    Bachelor of Science in Geology, Geological Engineering, or related field
•    Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in open pit or a closely related field with prior exposure coordinating and supervising a geology team
•    Professional Geology designation, preferred 
•    Qualified Person designation, or ability to work towards a Qualified Person designation, to satisfy Canadian National Instrument 43-101 requirements, is an asset
•    Strong technical background, including experience with assay QA/QC, block modeling, geologic mapping, and ore control
•    Proficient in database and geology software, such as SQL, acQuire, and Leapfrog
•    Experience with mining software such as Minesight, Vulcan, or an equivalent
•    Strong interpersonal communication, written and verbal skills
•    Able to work effectively without constant supervision
•    Ability to prioritize and display excellent time management skills
