Dam Operating Engineer in Training - EIT

Reporting to the Geotechnical Engineer, Tailings & Water, the Dam Operating Engineer in Training - EIT will support the management, governance and regulatory compliance for Red Dog’s Tailings Storage Facility (TSF). Responsibilities include supporting the implementation of operations, maintenance, and surveillance strategies and tasks associated with management of the TSF. A successful candidate will provide internal technical support to the site-based geotechnical and tailings engineers for the operations and surveillance of the TSF.

 

The candidate will work a two week on, two week off work schedule.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Complete assigned work in a professional manner, including necessary measurements, calculations, analyses, interpretations, reporting and recommendations.
  • Communicate effectively with operating, analytical and maintenance groups to ensure optimum utilization of resources.
  • Draft work plans and assist in coordinating activities for the operation and regulatory compliance of the TSF.
  • Review and monitor all operations and field activities related to dam operations, monitoring, and surveillance.  Prepare reports as required.
  • Understand and embrace Teck’s Tailings and Water Retention Facility policy, governance structure, and guidance documentation, as well as Alaska Dam Safety policies and guidelines.
  • Complete audits and inspections of dam structures and report findings and observations to their Supervisor or designee.
  • Analyze, identify, and resolve technical and installation issues on dam instrumentation or operational practices and ensures adherence to relevant guidelines, policies, and regulations.
  • Track and report on operational metrics using KPIs, schedule, cost tracking and other operational and project management tools. 
  • Maintain proper field notes and documentation, as well as, various reports related to regulatory, legal, permitting or compliance purposes through intermediate-advanced use of spreadsheets and word processing
  • Proactively evaluate and propose improvement opportunities consistent with Teck’s overall policy and guidance.
  • Complete and support in data acquisition and/or sample collection as requested by the Tailings & Water engineers
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of environmental risks and hazards as well as complies with safety policies and procedures and ensures daily workplace inspections are done in order to accurately identify and correct workplace hazards
  • Supports execution of short term operating objectives related to management of the sites tailings and water retaining structures.  These include; tailings deposition, water treatment activities, independent and internal reviews/audits and their associated recommendations, and working with other communities of interested. 
  • Performs and completes other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (civil, geotechnical, geological, environmental, mining, mineral processing or related).
  • Between one (1) to three (3) years of experience in operation of tailings storage and/or water retaining structures.
  • Experience using Muck3D, GoldSim, AutoCAD 3D and similar programs would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to install, monitor and troubleshoot geotechnical and environmental instrumentation.
  • Experience with soil and/or rock specimen laboratory testing programs for index and strength properties is an asset.
  • Interest in cold regions and permafrost soils related to geotechnical engineering is desired.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Strong ability to compile, evaluate, analyze and present data.
  • Excellent in MS Office Suite
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Capable of working with all levels of the organization and in a team environment
  • Motivated self-starter with an ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment and a willingness to take on additional tasks as required.
  • Desire and capable to perform field work in harsh environments including lifting 50lbs, hiking through snow and/or uneven terrain in low light, and temperatures ranging from -40F to 80F.
