The Marine Mammal Observer is responsible for marine mammal observations, observation data entry, and other duties as assigned for the 2025 Port Site dredging season
Rotation schedule will be 2 weeks on-site with 1 week off-site
Reporting to the Port Operations Supervisor
Responsibilities:
- Observe and identify marine mammals
- Inform Port Site Operations when marine mammals are spotted
- Understand the different species of seals, whales, and other marine mammals
- Create and establish a data collection system that is user friendly and understandable so that anyone who looks at it can be able to understand marine mammal migration near the Red Dog Port Site
- Entry of daily marine mammal observations log as required by dredging permit
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of environmental risks and hazards as well as complies with safety policies and procedures and ensures daily workplace inspections are done in order to accurately identify and correct workplace hazards
- Ensure compliance with all established policies and standard operating procedures and advises coworkers and visitors of such policies and procedures as required
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Marine Mammal Observation training, preferred or avid marine mammal hunter in the region required
- Basic skills in Microsoft Office suite applications required
- Valid Driver's License, preferred
- Strong team cooperation is required
- Ability to perform all tasks with limited direction
- Work safely and follow instructions as per Teck policies.
- Required to work outdoors with a potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions
- Possess good organization and observation skills
- Strong communication skills
