Laborer, Sample Preparation Technician (Temporary)

Reporting to the Assay Laboratory Supervisor, the Sample Preparation Technician will collect and process samples from the mill, mine and geological studies, help Assay Technicians with tasks to include: sample weighing, washing labware, and pressing samples for XRF analysis.

 

Schedule will be 2 weeks on site and 2 weeks off site.

Responsibilities:

•    Use required personal protective equipment in order to promote a safe work environment this includes but is not limited to respiratory protection in the form of a respirator or powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR), hard hat, coveralls, steel toed boots, gloves, coveralls, and ear protection
•    Spend the majority of their shift, often in excess of 10 hours, split between the mill and sample preparation room.  This is a very physically demanding position involving walking several flights of stairs, lifting heavy samples, and using sample processing equipment
•    Process routine samples, demonstrating to the laboratory supervisor or a more senior Laboratory Assistant the knowledge of the specific processing requirements of each sample type
•    Operate and maintain the equipment used in sample preparation in order to safely prepare samples for analysis
•    Collect samples in the mill, at the appropriate collection times, in order to provide needed analytical samples to the Assay Laboratory
•    Attend and actively participate in daily safety meetings in order to promote a safe work environment.  As directed by the laboratory supervisor, the Lab Assistant 1 will present a short safety topic in a daily safety meeting, with assistance in preparation from the laboratory supervisor or a designated senior employee
•    Perform moisture analysis on a variety of sample types in order to assist in providing needed information for mill operations or shipping
•    Log in samples received in the sample preparation room in order to provide an audit trail should samples need to be tracked throughout their processing
•    Learn to operate the XRF analyzers in order to provide routine assays of mine pit samples
•    Safely operate the various crushing machines required to process geology samples
•    Accurately weigh samples in preparation for digestion and analysis
•    Prepare samples for Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analysis
•    Wash labware

Qualifications:

•    High school Diploma or equivalent
•    High school math required and High School science classes strongly preferred
•    Six (6) months prior experience preferred
•    Computer skills such as email and word processing
•    The ability to manage several tasks simultaneously
•    Ability to work proficiently with little to no supervision and must be able to work nights alone
•    Ability to wear all of the personal protective equipment required for the job duties
•    Must be physically fit and able to lift heavy samples repeatedly
•    Ability to lift up to 1 to 15 lbs frequently and occasionally lift 30 to 75 lbs
