Role Overview

Teck Alaska Incorporated, Red Dog Operations, one of the world's largest producers of zinc concentrate, is recruiting for a Geotechnical Engineer

 

Rotation schedule will be 2 weeks on-site with 2 weeks off-site

 

Reporting to the Principal Geotechnical Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures 
  • Complete assigned work in a professional manner including necessary measurements, calculations, analysis, interpretation, reporting, and recommendations
  • Develop an understanding of the company’s organization and workflow 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with both technical and operational staff
  • Provide technical and administrative support to the Engineering and Operations groups
  • Daily interaction and planning with Operations, D&B, Engineering and Surveying crews
  • Monitor general mining operations, pit high walls and waste rock storage facilities
  • Daily Pit Inspections and reporting of historic and contemporary instabilities, waste rock facilities and tailings dams
  • Deployment and troubleshooting of geotechnical monitoring equipment including (but not limited to):
    o    Radar monitoring systems
    o    Theodolite total stations and prisms
    o    Piezometers 
    o    Inclinometers / SAAs
    o    Thermistors
    o    Extensometers
    o    Depressurization wells
  • Assist with data assembly, analysis, organization, and presentations
  • Assist with Drill Pattern Hazard Maps
  • Preparation of maps, cross sections, logs, displays
  • Update weekly mine plans with hazard locations and status
  • Perform geotechnical mapping and interpretation
  • Digitize drill logs and other down hole information
  • Assist with development and implementation of civil infrastructure monitoring program
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Geological Engineering or Civil Engineering (Geotechnical emphasis) or related field
  • Zero to five (5) years mining industry experience
  • Geotechnical experience in an open pit environment is an asset
  • Geotechnical experience with civil infrastructure is an asset
  • Geotechnical logging experience (both rock core and soil) is an asset
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and Windows environment 
  • Working knowledge of mine engineering and geotechnical software (e.g. RocScience, GeoExplorer, FLAC, Minesight, and/or AutoCAD Civil3D) is an asset
  • Strong interpersonal communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
