Role Overview

Reporting to the Principal Engineer, Tailings & Environment, the Engineer, Tailings & Environment (Engineer) is a progressive position. The Engineer is responsible for supporting closure and reclamation planning and reporting, and closure execution readiness at Red Dog Mine. The role will work with the Senior Closure Lead, Biodiversity Lead, and other internal and external professionals responsible for the planning and delivery of closure, biodiversity and reclamation initiatives across all aspects of Red Dog’s operations; including updating plans and designs; compliance monitoring and reporting, closure and reclamation cost evaluation and reporting; designing and executing biodiversity projects; and participating in Teck’s external engagement activities with various regulatory agencies, partners, and local communities. 

Rotational Schedule will be 2 weeks on-site with 2 weeks off-site

Key Responsibilities

•    Support closure planning and implementation on-site in alignment with Teck’s Closure Standard, and provide reporting on closure-related tasks.
•    Support identification and migration of closure, reclamation, and biodiversity risks, issues or challenges, develop and evaluate options, and implement solutions to address the risk, issues or challenges.  
•    Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of environmental risks and hazards and adhere to all safety policies and procedures. 
•    Ensure compliance with all established policies and standard operating procedures and advises coworkers and visitors of such policies and procedures as required. 
•    Ensure short- and long-term projects related to closure meet the operation’s needs. Ensure that reclamation projects are completed according to approved plans, specifications and development codes/permits. 
•    Understand Teck’s Biodiversity commitments including Nature Positive and reclamation needs
•    Prepare various professional reports, applications and submissions for internal and government audiences.
•    Support development and maintaining of the integrated Closure Execution Readiness Plan, ensuring alignment with corporate strategy, regulatory requirements, and site operational plans. Coordinate with engineering, operations, environmental, finance, and project teams to ensure readiness milestones are clearly defined and met. 
•    Support updating the 10Yr CapEx, R&D, and Reclamation plans needed for Life of Asset (LoA) for closure and MLE scenarios. Support development of closure and MLE budgets, ensuring cost accuracy, transparency, and alignment with execution plans. Monitor financial performance against readiness milestones and adjust plans as needed.
•    Work with the Projects Team to prepare to execute progressive closure and reclamation projects. This includes ensuring reclamation projects have detailed cost estimates for the 10-yr LoA / Business Plan and annual budgets; detailed designs, and IFC drawings and specifications are prepared; and resources have been identified and procured in advance of execution. 
•    Communicate effectively with project, operating, analytical and maintenance groups to ensure optimum utilization of resources and onsite staff. 
•    Provide ongoing engineering technical support to operating, technical, and maintenance groups for optimization of reclamation and closure management processes. Provide technical expertise to operations and develop engineering solutions to problems. 
•    Manage Reclaimation and Closure Operational and Project scopes and budgets. Define scopes, milestones, budgets and success criteria in coordination with the Principal Engineer, Tailings & Environment and Senior Lead, Closure, and identified stakeholders. Track contracts, scopes of work, purchase orders, budget, contract commitments, and schedules and communicate progress to management. 
•    Manage consultants or contractors including scopes of work, proposals, budgets, contracts, and contractor/consultant supervision.
•    Analyze, identify, and resolve operational and installation issues on projects and ensure efficient interpretation of all design drawings and adherence to all Quality Control / Quality Assurance procedures for projects.
•    Develop subordinate professionals and technicians by participating in their selection, training, evaluating their performance, and by following, enforcing and administering company policies in a fair and equitable manner.
•    Proactively look for opportunities to advance innovation and technology projects. 
•    Other responsibilities as required or as assigned.

Qualifications

•    Bachelor’s degree in a relevant Engineering discipline (e.g. Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline)
•    Master's degree with specialization in mine closure, geotechnical engineering, hydrotechnical engineering, geomorphology, or reclamation is considered an asset.
•    Minimum five (5) years’ experience with mine closure, mine waste management, civil earthworks, reclamation, or related fields. Demonstrated experience with closure landforms design, waste dump cover systems, surface water management infrastructure, project management. Seven (7) or more years of relevant experience preferred.
•    Valid Driver's License.
•    Demonstrated success in working with operations, environmental and engineering teams.  
•    Technical knowledge of relevant legislation, standards, and effective industry practices would be preferred.  
•    Must have good organization and observation skills.  
•    Strong oral and written communication skills in both formal and informal settings, including technical writing, data analysis and reporting.  
•    Ability to work productively with nominal supervision and work independently.  
•    Ability to work collaboratively and productively as a team member, a supervisor of consultants, and with external communities of interest including regulatory agencies and indigenous peoples.
•    Knowledge of best practices in Sustainability Management including land management, closure of mine sites, biodiversity in reclamation projects, and State of Alaska regulations of land and closure.
•    Previous experience setting a budget, cost tracking and cost forecasting with the project completion on time and within budget and be cost conscious developing and implementing cost saving measures and utilizing organizational resources to maximize efficiency of projects. 
•    Proficient in MS Office suite is required. Experience using AutoCAD Civil3D, ArcGIS, and similar programs is preferred.
•    Must be a highly motivated self-starter with the ability to work with limited supervision.
•    Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment with minimal guidance.
•    Strong analytical and decision-making abilities with a proven capacity in practical problem solving and ability to compile and analyze technical data.
•    Capable of working with all levels of the organization and in a team environment. Excellent interpersonal and written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
•    Experience in arctic environments would be considered an asset. Must be willing to work outdoors with a potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions.
