Dam Safety Engineer

Teck Alaska Incorporated, Red Dog Operations, one of the world's largest producers of zinc concentrate, is recruiting for a Dam Safety Engineer, Tailings & Water. Due to anticipated needs, we are currently recruiting for a career oriented individual to fill this role.  Rotation schedule will be 2 weeks on-site with 2 weeks off-site 

 

Reporting to the Senior Lead, Sustainability

 

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Protect the safety and health of employees by promoting safe working procedures and health programs in accordance with Teck Alaska policy and appropriate regulations
  • Complete assigned work in a professional manner, including necessary measurements, calculations, analysis, interpretations, reporting and recommendations
  • Implement the operation, surveillance, and maintenance plan (OMS) and Tailings Management System including completion of routine dam inspections
  • Manage the instrumentation and data systems related to the TSF and dams on site including instrumentation troubleshooting, data collection, data analysis, reporting, and continuous improvement
  • Provide updates to operating, maintenance, and surveillance manuals, along with emergency preparedness and response plans, and other tailings management system documents
  • Analyze monitoring and surveillance data, report on routine dam inspections, and approve recommendations for improvement of structure conditions
  • Collaborate with the Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer (RTFE) and Engineer of Record (EOR) to ensure all work complies with industry best practice, regulatory requirements, HSEC Standards, and relevant guidelines including GISTM
  • Support tracking and completion of recommendations and actions related to Independent Tailings Review Board (ITRB), Tailings Governance Reviews, GISTM activities and coordinate appropriate resourcing and project planning to complete associated tasks
  • Ensure short and long-term projects related to the dam safety and tailings management meet the operation's needs.  Ensure that projects associated with the TSF are completed according to approved plans, specifications and development codes/permits
  • Support public encouragement and disclosure related to tailings and the tailings facility in collaboration with community relations department
  • Ensure that all engineering services provided comply with environmental regulations, State agencies and programs
  • Develop, track and report on operational metrics using KPIs, management of change, schedules and develop recovery plans
  • Provide engineering expertise for operations and construction of the tailings storage facility as well as conduct studies related to new or future developments or opportunities relevant to the Red Dog Operation
  • Technical writing for operations and project documents, manuals and training programs, as well as technical review of various reports from external consultants
  • Manage projects to ensure the quality and quantity of work being performed meets the operation’s needs.  Ensure that projects associated with the Tailings Management Facility are completed according to approved plans, specifications and development codes/permits
  • Support reporting to internal and eternal stakeholders to review performance under the Tailings Management Policy and Framework, Tailings Management System, an Closure Standard and recommend improvements in these systems, commitments, and standards as applicable
  • Effectively communicate with operations, technical groups and contractors; and liaise with outside agencies and communities of interest to meet the operations overall objectives
  • Other responsibilities as required or as assigned

 

Qualifications:

  • BSc. Engineering or equivalent with Civil, Geological or Geotechnical specializations. MSc or equivalent with Civil, Geological, Geotechnical or Mine Waste Management specializations preferred
  • 3-5 years' experience in dam construction, tailings storage facility and tailings management, geotechnical engineering, mining or a closely related field
  • Experience in a multi-disciplinary engineering, tailings management facility design, dam construction, operation and closure planning, government liaison, regulatory compliance, and approvals
  • Working knowledge of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management requirements, Mining Association of Canada's tailings protocols and Canadian Dam Association guidelines is strongly preferred
  • Proficient in MS Office suite and AutoCAD Civil 3D Software is required
  • Experience with FLAC, Geostudio, RocScience, ArcGIS, Muk3D, GeoExplorer and similar programs is preferred
  • Previous experience and knowledge of using analytic tools such as Power BI for measuring KPI's would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with surveying and geomatics would be considered an asset
  • Must be a highly motivated, organized, self-starter with the ability to work with limited supervision
  • Excellent interpersonal and written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment with minimal guidance
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to compile and analyze technical data
  • Capable of working with all levels of the organization and in a team environment
