Role Overview
The Assay Laboratory Intern will report to the Assay Laboratory Supervisor
Key Responsibilities
• Demonstrate ability safely handle a wide variety of chemicals that may be toxic, corrosive or have the potential to cause fire or explosion.
• Dispose of waste material generated in the laboratory to conform to all environmental regulations and policies.
• Collection and preparation of daily samples.
• Utilization of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) in order to input data and log out samples that are analyzed by the assay laboratory.
• Perform analysis using applicable analytical instrumentation on samples from a variety of sources, in order to provide accurate and precise analytical data that meets the needs of the departments that request the analysis.
• Prepare standard solution and reagents for laboratory use, precisely following written instructions to produce chemical solutions of known concentration for use by all assayers. Preparation of standards used for analytical instruments will be under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor or Lead Assayer.
• Carry out supervised studies to determine the validity of changes to analytical procedures, or to test new analytical procedures so that the accuracy and precision of new methods can be confirmed prior to initiating the procedure throughout the laboratory.

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Education required: 1-3 years of university education and enrolled in a related science program (i.e., chemistry, geology, biology, etc.).
• Preferred qualifications: laboratory experience with emphasis on experience with analytical instrumentation and safely handling chemicals.
• Good written and verbal communications are important for this position.
• Ability to occasionally lift forty pounds.
• Perform analyses which require standing and/or walking for extended periods of time.
• Enter data and work with computerized instruments, which will involve significant repetitive motion.
• Discern from the printed labels chemicals that require specific personal protective gear or other safety related handling.
• Follow specific written instructions (Standard Operating Procedures) that describe the laboratory procedures in order to safely and accurately perform the required analyses.
• Respond appropriately to safety warnings that may occur within the laboratory; specifically, to sirens, warning bells or an oral notification of danger that may exist, in order to safely perform the needed analyses
