Role Overview

 

Reporting to the Manager of Geotechnical Engineering, the Principal/Senior Geotechnical Engineer provides technical leadership, professional judgment, and subject matter expertise across Teck’s operations and project portfolio. The role is responsible for supporting safe, efficient, and sustainable mining through robust geotechnical engineering practices, sound risk management, and strong technical governance.

 

This position requires frequent domestic and/or international travel.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Provide geotechnical engineering judgment and advisory support to site-based geotechnical teams and projects.
  • Support the identification, evaluation, and mitigation of geotechnical risks associated with open pits, rock storage facilities, and mine-related geotechnical structures.
  • Review and challenge geotechnical analyses, designs, monitoring data, and operating practices to ensure alignment with industry best practice, Teck standards and risk tolerance.
  • Support senior leadership and technical teams with expert input to trade-off studies, alternative evaluations, and long-term mine planning decisions.
  • Lead project development initiatives, including scoping studies, pre-feasibility studies, feasibility studies, detailed design, and project execution.
  • Review and guide geotechnical scopes of work for internal teams and external consultants.
  • Assist in the planning, organization, and implementation of Geotechnical Review Boards and Independent Technical Reviews.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and continuously improving Teck’s internal geotechnical guidelines and standards for the design, operation, and closure of open pits, rock storage facilities, and other mine-related geotechnical structures.
  • Contribute to knowledge transfer and standardization across sites and projects.
  • Provide direction, coaching, and mentoring to developing and early-career geotechnical engineers, with emphasis on sound judgment, risk awareness, and professional growth.

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in geotechnical, geological, mining, or civil engineering (Master’s degree or PhD is considered an asset).
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC), or eligible for registration.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in mining geotechnical engineering.
  • Proficiency in the geotechnical design, implementation, and operation of open pits and rock storage facilities across hard rock, weak rock and sedimentary deposits.
  • Proficiency in slope stability analysis for open pit operations, including complex rock mass and structurally controlled failure and deformation mechanisms.
  • Proficiency in rock mechanics and rock engineering principles.
  • Proven experience with risk assessment, management, and monitoring of slopes operating outside the established design acceptance criteria.
  • Established background in planning and carrying out geotechnical site investigations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in numerical modelling, including model calibration and validation.
  • Demonstrated experience with blast‑induced rock mass damage and associated mitigation measures.
  • Demonstrated experience with rock mass depressurization.
  • Strong understanding of soil mechanics principles and their application to open pit slope design and waste storage facility foundation design.
  • Solid understanding of underground mining geotechnical design.
  • Solid understanding of geotechnical software such as Slide, Dips, RS2, FLAC (2D and 3D), and UDEC (2D and 3D).
  • Solid understanding of AutoCAD, Leapfrog, or equivalent software.
  • Solid understanding of Excel or equivalent data analysis tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and technical writing skills.
  • Spanish language proficiency (is considered an asset).

 

Pay Range: CAD $150,000 - $185,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
