Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Operations is Canada’s largest open-pit copper mine and molybdenum operation. HVC produces both copper and molybdenum concentrate through autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding and flotation.

Reporting to the General Supervisor, Training and Standards, the Training Supervisor, Dozer, Loader, Grader & Shovel is responsible for leading the delivery and continuous improvement of training programs for production and support equipment operators. This role ensures alignment between operator capability, equipment performance, and operational requirements through effective coaching, competency development, and standardization.

 

The Training Supervisor plays a key role in fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and operational excellence, ensuring operators are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and situational awareness required to safely and effectively work alongside autonomous haulage systems and other digitally enabled mine operations.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Leadership:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, modeling and enforcing safety standards, procedures, and behaviors across all training and onboarding activities within Mine Operations.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and operational discipline through consistent messaging, coaching, and mentorship.
  • Ensure training programs incorporate critical safety content aligned with site-specific rules and regulatory requirements.

 

Training Program Oversight:

  • Lead the delivery and continuous improvement of training programs for dozer, loader, grader, and electric shovel operators.
  • Conduct classroom and field-based training to ensure competency development and adherence to operational standards.
  • Maintain accurate training records, competency assessments, and progression tracking for assigned operators.

 

Dozer, Loader, Grader & Shovel Training

  • Deliver comprehensive equipment training including pre‑operational inspections, safe start‑up and shutdown procedures, and efficient operating techniques.
  • Train operators on best practices for digging, loading, leveling, road construction and maintenance, push techniques, and material management.
  • Reinforce standards related to ground engagement tools, equipment care, productivity, and damage prevention.
  • Ensure operators understand and comply with traffic management plans, bench and face safety requirements, dumping procedures, and emergency response actions.
  • Train operators to safely and predictably operate in proximity to Autonomous Mining Trucks (AMTs), including shovel loading interactions, haul road crossings, dump locations, and shared operating areas.
  • Build operator awareness of Autonomous Operating Zones (AOZ), geofence boundaries, exclusion zones, and interaction rules to maintain safe separation and system reliability.
  • Support operator readiness for abnormal and non‑standard conditions, including manual intervention scenarios and recovery activities involving autonomous equipment.

 

Peer-to-Peer Trainer Supervision & Development

  • Oversee and support peer-to-peer trainers assigned to shovel and support equipment training.
  • Ensure trainers are developed with strong coaching, communication, and assessment skills.
  • Provide feedback, guidance, and development plans to strengthen trainer effectiveness and consistency.

 

Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor training effectiveness and operator performance to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and Safety teams to align training with operational priorities.
  • Support initiatives that improve equipment utilization, reduce variability and damage, and enhance overall operational performance in conventional and autonomous environments.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Minimum five (5) years of open pit mining experience operating or supervising dozers, loaders, graders, and/or electric shovels.
  • Strong understanding of safe operating practices and mine standards.
  • Knowledge of the B.C. Mines Act and Code.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication (written and verbal), and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Valid driver’s license.

 

Assets:

  • Experience training adult learners in an industrial environment.
  • Familiarity with competency management systems (e.g., SuccessFactors, iAuditor).
  • First Aid and Transportation of Dangerous Goods certifications.
  • B.C. Mine Shift Boss, Mine Supervisor certification, or equivalent.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment.

Pay Range: CAD $108,000 - $133,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.


Working Conditions:

  • Location: Highland Valley Copper is a 50-minute drive from Kamloops, which has all of the comforts of city living and is also close to Merritt, Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, which all exude a small town community atmosphere.
  • Access: This is a drive-in/drive-out role. Most employees commute to site by car, and carpooling is common among team members.
