Superintendent, Engineering & Projects

Reporting to the Manager of Asset Management, the Superintendent, Projects & Engineering is responsible for the management and supervision of the Projects & Engineering department at Highland Valley Copper as well as all related processes and procedures.  The incumbent is responsible for the effectiveness and the quality of work by project staff, and fosters an environment to enable staff to execute accurate and technically competent work. 

 

To be successful, we require someone with a strong project management and engineering background, with experience leading multi-disciplinary teams in a similar industrial environment. This is a key role for the site that will lead an assortment of technical and construction management projects. The Superintendent is also responsible to lead the team in keeping a high standard in the application of best engineering practices aligned with EGBC’s requirements and Teck’s Professional Practice Management Plan. 

 

Responsibilities: 

 

  • Establish and promote the maintenance and continuous improvement of a Safe and Healthy-working environment through personal commitment to Courageous Safety Leader and the principles of the HVC Safety and Health Policy.
  • Develop and execute strategic direction and tactical plan for the Dam Construction, Site Engineering & Project groups to ensure LOM plans are achieved and strategic plans and long term goals are met. 
  • Along with the Superintendent, Geotechnical, ensure that dams across site are built & maintained to the required specifications including GISTM. Execute annual work as determined by LOM planning with a focus on LL & HH dam raises and associated works
  • Manage contractor efforts for dam building and ensure a strong working relationship that fosters capacity building 
  • Ensure that Capital and Non-Routine project plans are established and maintained; ensuring the HVC Small Project Framework Stage Gating requirements are met and the proper resources are assigned to each project (Project Coordinator, Senior Project Coordinator, etc).
  • Establish, implement and maintain Project procedures and processes to ensure effectiveness and quality of work within the Site Engineering & Projects Group.
  • Coordinate the cost effective and appropriate use of contractors and ensure proper notification for the use of contractors in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Ensure policies, procedures, processes, systems, tools are consistently and effectively utilized by the teams and escalation of issues and concerns are dealt with effectively.
  • Contribute to cost control by providing input to budgets by monitoring and reporting on expenditures and by identifying opportunities to continually reduce operating costs.
  • Develops staff by: evaluating performance (BSWP), supporting development plans, determining training needs, documenting succession plans and by requesting additional resources as required to make recommendations regarding selection, development, promotion, transfer and/or termination. 
  • Performs other related duties as required.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
  • A Professional Engineering (P. Eng) designation, registered or eligible for registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. (EGBC); Teck will support eligible employees with their EGBC registration 
  • Minimum 10 years successful experience in engineering management roles on major infrastructure, mining and/or process plant projects 
  • Primavera P6/MS Project experience
  • Tailings & Dam Construction experience
  • AutoCAD/Solidworks experience an asset
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) designation an asset
  • This position requires good interpersonal, communication and organizational skills as well as the ability to adapt to ever changing work demands.

Salary Range: $144,000 - $178,000

 

The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
