Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Operations is Canada’s largest open-pit copper mine and molybdenum operation. HVC produces both copper and molybdenum concentrate through autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding and flotation.
 
Located approximately 17 kilometers west of Logan Lake and about 50 kilometers southwest of Kamloops in British Columbia, the surrounding areas of HVC have an abundant offering of outdoor experiences.

Reporting to the General Supervisor, Asset Integrity, the Senior Engineer is responsible for leading the planning and safe execution of Highland Valley Copper’s (HVC) Structural Integrity Program. This role ensures the program aligns with HVC’s safety, reliability, and business objectives. The Structural Integrity Program (Program) focuses on planning and executing engineering inspections and structural repairs related to concrete, structural steel, and piping assets across the site. The Program must be in alignment with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC) and Code requirements, at a minimum. The practices and strategies must focus on the health and safety along with environmental stewardship of the assets.

 

To be successful, we are looking for someone with previous technical and leadership experience focused on structural integrity, reliability, and asset health strategies. Strong verbal and written communication, as well as excellent interpersonal, organization and problem-solving abilities are required. A team-oriented individual with a strong focus on safety, personal responsibility and integrity, and who is highly self-motivated. The ability to maintain a positive and flexible attitude while working independently in a fast-paced and dynamic environment is vital in this role.

 

This role includes significant interaction with various stakeholders across the mine site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader and foster a culture of health and safety through Teck’s Life Saving Commitments
  • Ensuring compliance with Teck’s Health, Safety and Environmental Programs and the BC Mines Act
  • Develop, oversee, and update the Structural Integrity program with clear scope, schedule, and cost. This includes creating a detailed 3-year business plan based on planned inspections and identified repair plans
  • Ensuring continued integration with our CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) and Planning & Scheduling inputs
  • Manage the Structural Integrity budget, applying effective cost control measures to optimize financial performance.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Execution, and Planning teams to develop and implement structural repair plans that prioritize safety and minimize operational impact.
  • Responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient execution of prepared work scopes, inclusive any contract workers involved in structural repairs
  • Accountable for the classification and prioritization of deficiencies according to Asset Criticality and Risks including Likelihood (Probability) and Consequence (Impact) of Failures, and projected Timelines to Consequence.
  • Coordinate with engineering consultants to safely execute planned inspections on structural steel, concrete, and piping.
  • Work in a team environment and share skills/experience with other members of the team.

Qualifications

  • Mechanical or Civil Engineering degree from a recognized post-secondary institution. Prior experience in Structural Engineering is considered a strong asset.
  • Eligible for registration, or currently registered, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the Province of British Columbia.
  • 5+ years of experience in Asset Management, Project Management, Maintenance Planning and Scheduling, and/or Execution; operational experience in mining or heavy industrial environments is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to manage scope, schedule, and cost; experience overseeing budgets of $5M or more is considered an asset.
  • Strong leadership abilities with a proven track record in developing and coaching teams
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and proficiency with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) such as Maximo or SAP.
  • Prior experience working in unionized environment would be considered an asset
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while leading change
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to be flexible and manage a variety of assignments and situations simultaneously.
  • Self-motivated, resourceful, and flexible team player

Pay Range: CAD $119,000 - $147,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.

  • Location: Highland Valley Copper is a 50-minute drive from Kamloops, which has all of the comforts of city living and is also close to Merritt, Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, which all exude a small town community atmosphere.
  • Access: This is a drive-in/drive-out role. Most employees commute to site by car, and carpooling is common among team members.
