About Highland Valley Copper
Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Operations is Canada’s largest open-pit copper mine and molybdenum operation. HVC produces both copper and molybdenum concentrate through autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding and flotation.

Reporting to the Senior Supervisor, Mine Operations, the Pit Supervisor is responsible for supervising frontline mining crews and equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant execution of daily mining activities. This role focuses on maintaining operational discipline, monitoring performance, and providing clear direction to operators to achieve production targets.
The ideal candidate is safety-driven, detail-oriented, and committed to supporting crews in a fast-paced environment while ensuring adherence to mine plans and company standards.
Key Responsibilities
Safety
- Act as a safety leader by enforcing all safety and environmental rules and procedures.
- Conduct regular worksite inspections, hazard assessments, and safe work observations.
- Ensure all personnel are trained, competent, and equipped for assigned tasks.
- Respond promptly to unsafe conditions and initiate corrective actions.
Crew Supervision
- Direct and supervise operators and field personnel to execute daily mining plans.
- Assign tasks clearly and verify completion against production objectives.
- Monitor crew performance, provide feedback, and address issues impacting productivity or compliance.
- Support employee development through on-the-job coaching and reinforcement of best practices.
Operational Control
- Oversee loading, hauling, dumping, and pit development activities to maintain production flow.
- Monitor equipment utilization and report delays or mechanical issues to maintenance promptly.
- Track progress against shift targets and communicate updates to the Senior Supervisor.
- Ensure proper traffic flow and pit conditions for safe and efficient operations.
Compliance and Reporting
- Administer collective agreements and company policies consistently.
- Maintain accurate shift records, including production data, safety observations, and incident reports.
- Participate in investigations related to safety, environmental incidents, or industrial relations.
- Ensure compliance with mine plans, regulatory requirements, and environmental standards.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve crew efficiency and reduce delays.
- Provide input on operational challenges and suggest practical solutions.
- Support initiatives that enhance pit conditions and equipment interactions.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience in open pit mining operations with supervisory responsibilities.
- Valid Shift Boss Certificate or eligibility for certification.
- Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent).
- Strong understanding of mine safety regulations and operational standards.
- Basic computer skills; experience with fleet management systems (MineStar, Autonomous Haulage) is an asset.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain composure under pressure.
Assets
- Experience working in a unionized environment.
- Familiarity with iAuditor and SuccessFactors.
- First aid and transportation tickets.
- Knowledge of Autonomous Haulage Systems and fleet management platforms.
Pay Range: CAD $106,000 - $131,000 per year
The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
Working Conditions:
- Location: Highland Valley Copper is a 50-minute drive from Kamloops, which has all of the comforts of city living and is also close to Merritt, Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, which all exude a small town community atmosphere.
- Access: This is a drive-in/drive-out role. Most employees commute to site by car, and carpooling is common among team members.
