Reporting to the Safety Supervisor, the Safety Co-op Student will obtain the knowledge and skills required to deal with challenges that may arise at a large-scale mining operation. Our employees are versatile, flexible and well-equipped to handle each project with confidence. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to practice their skills in in all aspects of the safety department.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Demonstrate courageous leadership by promoting a safe work environment, ensuring compliance with Teck Health, Safety and Environmental Programs and the BC Mines Act
  • Site safety audits
  • Facilitate safety training for hourly and management employees as required
  • Managing contractor pre-clearance and access systems
  • Perform general safety related duties as needed

Qualifications:

  • Working towards an Occupational Health and Safety diploma/degree/certification OR enrolled into an equivalent degree program focused on safety, health or mining
  • Possess a valid driver’s license (minimum BC 7N or equivalent)
  • You must be currently attending post-secondary education and you will be enrolled to attend again for the semester following the work term
  • Minimum 2 years work experience in mining or heavy construction industry considered an asset
  • First Aid background considered an asset
  • Must be willing to relocate
  • Experience in practical and theoretical safety/loss control is an asset
  • Experience working effectively with hourly and management employees as well as Occupational Health and Safety Committees is an asset
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong computer skills particularly with Microsoft Office®
