Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Operations is Canada’s largest open-pit copper mine and molybdenum operation. HVC produces both copper and molybdenum concentrate through autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding and flotation.
 
Located approximately 17 kilometers west of Logan Lake and about 50 kilometers southwest of Kamloops in British Columbia, the surrounding areas of HVC have an abundant offering of outdoor experiences.

Reporting to the Superintendent, Financial Accounting, the Intermediate Financial Accountant (Temporary 18-month term) supports the accurate and timely financial reporting for Teck Highland Valley Copper (HVC). The role is responsible for maintaining general ledger integrity, supporting the preparation of account reconciliations, SOX compliance requirements, and assisting in the preparation of financial information for both site-level reporting and Corporate consolidation.

 

This role plays a key part in ensuring adherence to IFRS and internal accounting policies while contributing to continuous improvement in financial processes and controls and works collaboratively across departments, providing support during audits and month-end/year-end reporting cycles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote and adhere to Teck’s Health, Safety, and Environmental policies and programs, participating in safety initiatives and contributing to a safe and healthy workplace
  • Initiate and approve month-end journal entries, ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial results.
  • Support detailed balance sheet reconciliations and variance analysis in accordance with SOX requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of monthly financial reporting packages for submission to Corporate.
  • Support the review and analysis of financial results, identifying trends, anomalies, and areas requiring follow-up.
  • Update and maintain Power BI dashboards
  • Oversee credit card and fuel card programs by performing audits, updating dashboards, and approving entries ensuring the accurate flow of transactions from source systems to the general ledger.
  • Coordinate documentation of changes to internal controls in compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) requirements.
  • Collaborate with Finance and cross-functional teams to conduct a fixed asset review, including existence testing, valuations, and documentation updates in preparation for an ERP implementation.
  • Assist with internal and external audits by providing required schedules, analysis, and explanations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Working towards a Professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent) is an asset.
  • 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a mining, industrial, or large corporate environment.
  • Strong understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and the Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) control framework.
  • Strong working knowledge of Power BI, SharePoint, or related data and document management tools is considered an asset.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong working knowledge of MS Office applications.
  • Experience with SAP S/4HANA or Microsoft Dynamics 365 is considered an asset.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ownership, accountability, and a proactive approach to work.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
  • High ethical standards and commitment to accurate financial reporting.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license (minimum BC class 7N or equivalent).

Pay Range: CAD $95,000 - $118,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.


Working Conditions:

  • Location: Highland Valley Copper is a 50-minute drive from Kamloops, which has all of the comforts of city living and is also close to Merritt, Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, which all exude a small town community atmosphere.
  • Access: This is a drive-in/drive-out role. Most employees commute to site by car, and carpooling is common among team members.
