Role Overview

Start Date: January 5, 2026 

 

For this exciting position, we are specifically targeting students who specialize in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or other related engineering fields. The successful candidate will complete vital tasks to maintain the compliance of our Energy Management System. Reporting to the Lead Energy Coordinator, the Decarbonization Co-op supports initiatives related to energy, water, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions management. This includes tracking energy consumption and emissions sources, as well as gathering data for monthly GHG reporting.  

 

If you are not currently located in the area of this co-op position, you are willing to either commute or relocate to the surrounding area for the entire duration of the co-op term. You are also currently a student enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary institution and will be enrolled throughout the duration of the co-op term (you will also be returning back to the post-secondary institution once the co-op term is completed). Proof of a valid work permit will also be required, if applicable.

Pay Range: CAD $4,700 - $6,000 per month 

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity. 

  

Working Conditions: 

  • Location: Highland Valley Copper is a 50-minute drive from Kamloops, which has all of the comforts of city living and is also close to Merritt, Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, which all exude a small town community atmosphere. 
  • Access: This is a drive-in/drive-out role. Most employees commute to site by car, and carpooling is common among team members.  

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures 
  • Conduct data analysis of energy savings and BC Hydro submittals required to access energy bill reductions and incentives 
  • Support employee engagement for programs such as Forward-thinking Ideas and Anti-Idling, and energy saving projects 
  • Support projects about compressed air system, water management, energy map - automation 
  • Assist with safety investigations and complete assigned actions from investigations
  • Support initiatives to encourage ideas for improving energy, water, and GHG emission management
  • Support the tracking of project progress and coordinate with maintenance and operations teams to ensure accurate completion
  • Support the measurement and validation studies to prove that projects achieve their targeted energy savings and efficiency improvements
  • Analyze data to identify trends, patterns, and opportunities for improving energy, water, and GHG management
  • Maintain monthly tracking and performance monitoring of GHG emission sources
  • Work closely with corporate and HVC teams to ensure effective project implementation and employee engagement
  • Maintain accurate records of reports, project details, implementation data, and GHG emission sources 

Qualifications

 

  • Background in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil or Mechatronics engineering 
  • Curiosity and passion about decarbonization, renewable gas and environmental sustainability 
  • Able to build and cultivate positive relationship with external collaborators 
  • Ability to communicate with precision in a technical environment 
  • Able to articulate sophisticated concepts clearly and in a way a diverse audience would understand 
  • Strong social skills, able to connect with individuals of a diverse set of backgrounds
  • Motivated and driven to learn 
  • Self-starter with good problem-solving skills
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for the duration of the co-op is required 


All students will be required to complete pre-employment drug and medical screenings prior to commencing work.
