Manager, Exploration – Peru

Location: Lima, Peru

Reporting to the Director, Exploration – South America, the Manager, Exploration - Peru is responsible for overseeing the effective execution and management of the local Exploration entities, office, staff and Exploration programs. The Manager, Exploration is responsible for providing administrative, commercial and technical expertise in operational and safety matters, working with the local exploration team and Exploration management to ensure that Exploration programs are planned, resources and executed in an efficient, effective and safe manner, consistent with Teck’s culture and values. The incumbent is responsible for coaching, mentoring and leading the local staff in the areas of performance management, recruiting and career planning. The incumbent will be a leader in health, safety and sustainability within the region and promote Teck’s core values in all aspects of the role.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Manage the business of exploration within Teck Peru S.A. including all administrative, governance and technical requirements and initiatives;
  • Ensure the jurisdiction complies with Teck policy and reporting requirements by maintaining administrative systems consistent with governance needs;
  • Promote the company’s commitment to sustainability, the environment, and health and safety;
  • Ensure that that Teck’s environment, health, safety and community standards are met in the region;
  • Work with the local technical and administrative teams to: develop and monitor budgets; allocate resources to each project; and ensure that land tenure and legal reporting obligations are met;
  • Work closely with a local team of geoscientists to identify opportunities, evaluate programs, and provide oversight on planning and execution of multiple mid- to long-term exploration programs within the region;
  • Provide technical direction to all projects in Peru and pursue technical excellence and ensure application of technical standards and best practices on all exploration programs;
  • Work with local staff to evaluate risk associated with projects and exploration activities, and provide guidance on approach, timelines and procedures on how to mitigate risk at all phases of a project;
  • Manage all aspects of opportunity identification, pursuit and capture, as approved, within the jurisdiction;
  • Participate in and provide guidance to commercial evaluations, major project steering committees and liaise with the Exploration management team to identify new business opportunities;
  • Maintain a broad national network of industry contacts for intelligence and recruiting purposes and to promote Teck being a partner of choice with new opportunities as they arise;
  • Stay current in events, policy and legal changes applicable to community relations and exploration/mining in local jurisdiction;
  • Manage a staff of geoscience, support and administrative staff, and provide coaching, training and leadership in terms of employee development and career planning;
  • Participate in identification and recruitment of new talent to meet the needs of the region’s work; and
  • Build a culture of teamwork across all constituents and stakeholders and encourage cooperation and open communication.

Technical Competencies and Qualifications

  • A minimum of 15 years of geoscience and management experience and a degree in geoscience; a postgraduate degree would be a strong asset;
  • Extensive working knowledge and technical expertise with one or more ore deposit types in either copper, gold or zinc systems;
  • Ability to work effectively at a variety of scales and ability to guide exploration activities and evaluations at continent, district or deposit scales;
  • Management experience in major exploration projects with the ability to lead and have oversight of multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Detail oriented and process driven with a strong ability to integrate all geoscience disciplines in decision making;
  • Seeks ways to continuously improve business operations by refining practices, eliminating barriers, taking action to improve processes and mitigating problems that create inefficiencies;
  • Demonstrates business logic when making a decision; gathers input and makes decisions based on cost benefit analysis;
  • Understands how to set goals and prioritize tasks in order to achieve business results;
  • Encourages entrepreneurship, looks at creative and innovative ways to add value, looking a new ways of approaching work and improving efficiencies;
  • Identifies necessary change and evaluates opportunities based on long term objectives and leads a collaborative process inspiring clear vision for the future;
  • Demonstrates vision and strategic and innovative thinking;
  • Experience in performance management, planning, and control;
  • Demonstrates commercial and business acumen;
  • Fluent in written and oral Spanish and English;
  • Superior writing, presentation and interpersonal skills; and
  • A strong understanding of Teck’s corporate culture, strategy and management team.
