Teck's Corporate Office in Santiago is the administrative center for our mining operations in Chile, providing support to Quebrada Blanca (QB) in the Tarapacá Region and Carmen de Andacollo in Coquimbo.

Role Overview

 

Reporting to the Project Director, the Project Manager plays a key role in the successful outcomes of the project study through to execution for projects included in the overall QB Program of work. The Project Manager will perform their duties with close consultation with the QB Operations and LATAM Business Unit. Reporting to the Project Director of QB Studies and Projects Program, the role includes significant interaction and collaboration with Teck’s executive leadership team.

 

The Project Manager will ensure key success factors across health and safety, environmental compliance, sustainability, schedule, cost and quality are achieved. This role requires effective proven leadership on large scale mining projects, demonstrating the ability to maintain seamless interfaces with all functional and project disciplines such as engineering, procurement/contracts, construction management, commissioning, project controls, permitting, community relations and other supporting departments such as Health and Safety, Risk, Quality, Legal, Mine Planning, Technical Services, and Operations.

 

This position is based at Teck’s corporate offices in Santiago, Chile, under a hybrid work model, with a 5x2 schedule and requires availability for travel to site in a high-altitude environment (medical clearance mandatory) and internationally to corporate headquarters located in Canada on an as required basis.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Be a courageous safety leader, sponsoring Teck’s values and embedding a robust health, safety, environmental and inclusive culture across projects and interfaces with communities and asset operation partners.
  • Provide leadership within an execution framework to ensure quality, value, and timeliness in development and delivery of the project investment business cases, in alignment with the objectives of the project charters, corporate governance and regulatory compliance.
  • Lead projects from conceptual phase through to closeout managing stage gate planning and preparation, authoring and contributing to master project documentation, compilation of reviewer requirements and managing mandated governance and compliance requirements.
  • In collaboration with functional directors, establish and maintain detailed execution plans defining execution strategies, delivery models, scope, standards, policies, procedures and implementation systems across all delivery phases.
  • Develop and oversee the project scope, control budget and schedule and other methods of control to establish project baselines, basis of measurement, change management and reporting.
  • Provide oversight on:
    • Multi discipline engineering development by consultants and contractors.
    • Procurement and contracting strategies, including tendering and award processes and overseeing contractor procurement efforts to ensure high value and efficiency throughout the supply chain.
    • Contractor and consultant administration.
    • Construction methodologies including advanced work packaging, modularisation and offsite fabrication and assembly.
    • Pre-commissioning and testing, commissioning and start-up, ramp up, performance testing and handover to operations.
    • Interface management, stakeholder engagement and project communication and reporting requirements.
    • Champion integrated project delivery across data, resources, systems, processes and reporting.
    • Champion the implementation of proven global top tier technology, innovations and systems specific to mining and industrial processing plants to enhance project development, delivery outcomes and value to the asset.
  • Manage project opportunity and risk profiles to enable the successful execution and outcomes of each project phase.
  • Proactively manage and coordinate all interfaces of a multi-discipline study and project teams, internal Teck departments, delivery partners (external service providers and construction contractors) to deliver on the project objectives.
  • Identify and establish value in partnerships with consultants and contractors, and manage contractual relationships.
  • Develop resource plans and ensuring project staffing requirements are efficiently and effectively met in collaboration with functional leadership considering succession planning and key position redundancy.
  • Effectively communicate accurate project progress including influences to the business case to enable effective and timely decision-making.
  • Ensure quality assurance programs and initiatives are embedded, functional and capture lesson learned targeting continuous performance improvement.
  • Responsible to Identify opportunities for the acceleration of project development timeframes maintaining corporate governance and regulatory requirements.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Engineering degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 15 years project management experience across studies and projects, for the development and execution of a projects in the resource industry, preferably in mining with increasing levels of responsibility over time. >10 years of progressive development in project management would be considered for relevant candidates.
  • Strong stakeholder management, communication, interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills.
  • Hands-on with a respectful, positive, solution focused attitude.
  • Proven ability to develop and manage high performance project teams.
  • Demonstrated success in managing diverse teams of dedicated and shared resources to deliver project requirements.
  • Ability to clearly articulate priorities, success factors, risks and opportunities to the project team, and to prioritize the team’s focus on activities that impact project’s critical path.
  • Results oriented with strong organizational, planning and decision making skills.
  • English and Spanish: professional proficiency written and spoken advantageous.
