Reporting to the VP, Health and Safety and Chief Medical Officer, the Director, Security and Emergency Preparedness, LATAM will advise and support relevant leadership at our projects, operations and exploration sites in the LATAM region. Key stakeholders for this position will be the Senior Vice President for the LATAM region; the Executive Vice President (EVP) and Chief Project Development Officer; and the Vice President, exploration. This role will work collaboratively with their counterpart in North America.
The position will be based in Lima, Peru or Santiago, Chile with an expectation of regular travel in the LATAM region including to assets at high-altitude.
Key Responsibilities
- Security Leadership: Lead the development and implementation of comprehensive security strategies and plans for all LATAM activities and assets (projects, operations, exploration etc).
- Risk Management: Identify, evaluate, mitigate, and monitor operational and strategic risks. Develop and maintain risk management programs tailored to the region's unique challenges.
- Emergency Response: Oversee emergency response planning and execution, ensuring preparedness for crises and security incidents in alignment with the enterprise program.
- Collaboration: Support and advise projects, operations and exploration level leadership for security and emergency preparedness. Seek to build consistency and an overall strategic approach for the region. Work collaboratively with the Director, Security and Emergency Preparedness, North America, and other stakeholders to align security practices and share best practices. Ensure alignment and consistency with enterprise programs, standards and practices.
- Compliance: Ensure compliance with local and international laws, regulations, and standards related to security and risk management.
- Training and Development: Develop and implement training programs for security personnel and staff to enhance security awareness and capabilities.
- Incident Management: Lead investigations and response efforts for security incidents, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with relevant security and emergency response authorities, leaders, and other stakeholders
- Risk Exposure Management: Recommend, implement, and oversee to identify risk exposures throughout the LATAM region and develop effective solutions with ongoing monitoring and reassessment. Ensure effective communications and timely involvement in projects, product development, acquisitions, and divestitures.
- Security Plans and Assessments: Identify, direct, promote, coordinate, and participate in managing security plans, threat risk assessment protocols for LATAM region in alignment with general requirements of the Teck Security Management System.
- On-Site Risk Management: Monitor and promote on-site region-wide risk management operations and practices. Provide oversight and direction on monitoring liability exposures at operations. Inspire increased awareness and ownership of security and emergency risk issues throughout the region and monitor the completion and accuracy of relevant operational and enterprise risk registers.
- Monitoring Results: Continuously monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of risk management and security programs.
- Industry Participation: Participate in and occasionally take a leadership or contributory role within industry associations and activities. Build an industry network and liaise with outside organizations to ensure information exchange and mutual assistance.
- Aviation & Drones: Collaboration with enterprise aviation program to support site and regional compliance.
- Travel and Events: To support regional and local security and emergency preparedness for travel and events. To ensure the safety and security of individuals and groups travelling to the LATAM region.
Qualifications
- Bilingual English/Spanish (written and spoken)
- Ability to meet the working at high-altitude medical requirements for Peru and Chile
- Minimum of fifteen years’ of experience in leading security management, risk assessment and management and emergency response, preferably in the mining or resource sector.
- Proven track record of leading security for large scale operations and/or projects in challenging, complex environments.
- Background in crisis and contingency planning, as well as security emergency event reaction planning.
- Familiarity with geopolitical climate and security challenges within the LATAM region, specifically in the countries in which Teck operates including established relationships with the police, security services and business security
- Related formal education and designations, including Certified Protection Professional
- Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Planning training
- A proven leader with strong planning and decision making skills
- Comprehensive understanding of business and legal issues, and insurance, safety and sustainability trends as they affect the corporation
- Demonstrated experience monitoring and evaluating programs and initiatives
- Exceptional interpersonal and coaching skills
