Role Overview

 

Reporting to the Senior Supervisor, Environment and Permitting, the Lead, Environment is responsible for ensuring environmental compliance and supporting the development of environmental assessment and permitting strategies for Teck’s Legacy Properties.

 

This role includes analyzing and reporting environmental data, critically reviewing technical consultant reports, and developing and implementing environmental programs to reduce risks at Legacy Properties sites. The Lead, Environment will also support permitting processes to secure regulatory approvals required for stewardship, closure, and reclamation activities. This position can be based in Vancouver, BC, Kimberley, BC, or Calgary, AB.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety, environmental and social rules and procedures
  • Be an advocate for and promote an inclusive, respectful and equitable work environment
  • Provide leadership in compliance management according to regulatory permits and environmental regulations for a subset of Legacy properties
  • Lead or participate in environmental incident investigations, as the need arises
  • Lead external environmental consultants working on compliance monitoring, environmental assessments and other environmental monitoring programs, ensuring high quality deliverables are received on schedule and budget.
  • Critically evaluate monitoring data, identify data trends and work alongside the broader team to determine appropriate mitigations as required.
  • Effectively coordinate priorities to foster successful execution of field programs
  • Manage laboratory and field data in the environmental database software EQuIS
  • Lead the preparation of annual environmental permit and mine reclamation reports for multiple Legacy sites
  • Provide technical, process and administrative support of assessment and permitting projects
  • Communicate and collaborate with regulatory agencies
  • Provide oversight and implementation of Teck’s Environmental Management System (SiteLine) for tracking permit and regulator commitments
  • Support the development and review of Environmental Protection Work Plans and Environmental Management plans (e.g., waste management, spill response and wildlife management)

Qualifications

 

  • Minimum 7 years or more of professional experience in an environmental management, environmental assessment, or regulatory field
  • Degree in Biological Sciences, Environmental Science, Geosciences, or related field
  • Registered professional (e.g., RPBio, P. Ag., P. Geo.) or eligibility to be registered
  • Broad base of scientific knowledge, technical skills and environmental project coordination and/or management experience
  • Understanding and experience in environmental monitoring and best management practices in Canada
  • Experience with environmental assessment, water quality data interpretation and/or geochemistry and, ideally mining projects would be an asset
  • Experience engaging with regulators and communities of interest is an asset
  • Previous experience with data management and specifically experience with Earthsoft’s EQuIS software is an asset.
  • Experience using databases and software packages including MS Word, Excel, and Power Point is required
  • Outstanding interpersonal, organizational and communication skills

 

Pay Range: CAD $105,000 - $130,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
