Land Tenure Specialist (contract)

Role Overview

 

Reporting to the Manager, Social Performance & Lands, the Land Tenure Specialist supports land management for Teck’s Legacy Properties across Canada, including surface land tenure, agreements, contract negotiation and maintenance, and risk mitigation. This role also supports property acquisitions and divestments, maintains accurate land records, and recommends cost‑efficient land management strategies.

 

Success in this role requires exceptional negotiation skills to secure mutually beneficial agreements, strong organizational and analytical abilities, and the capacity to manage diverse land portfolios while ensuring regulatory compliance. Expertise in Canadian land rights, permitting, and property transactions is essential, along with proficiency in GIS, contract management, and risk assessment. The ideal candidate thrives on collaboration, problem-solving, and critical thinking to optimize land asset management.

 

This position is a 12-month contract opportunity with the possibility of extension. The location for this role has flexibility, with a preference for it to be based in Vancouver, BC, Calgary, AB, or Kimberley, BC. Some travel will be required to visit the sites (up to 30%).

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader: Adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Negotiation: Draft, negotiate, and maintain contracts for a variety of land agreements, including but not limited to, License of Occupation, Statutory Right of Way, Road Use, Access, and Purchase and Sale Agreements.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with internal teams to integrate land considerations into site-level operations.
  • Data Management & Record Keeping: Maintain detailed and accurate land documentation, including permits and agreements, as well as records of all third-party engagements related to land management.
  • Land Stewardship: Oversee stewardship of Teck’s Legacy Properties across Canada, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and Teck’s policies and standards.
  • Risk Reduction: Participate in site risk assessments and support land-related risk reduction efforts. Support in the timely resolution of land-related issues or grievances.
  • Research & Communication: Conduct research and prepare concise memos to ensure accurate land information is available for risk reduction and informed decision-making.

 

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years in land management and/or permitting experience in the resource development industry across multiple provinces and/or territories in Canada.
  • Strong understanding of land rights, permitting requirements, legal regulations, databases and reporting systems related to land management in Canada required.
  • A degree and/or certification in Business Administration/Commerce, Energy Management, Land Management or Geosciences.
  • Demonstrated experience negotiating land access and other commercial agreements, with strong business logic and an understanding of mining constraints and value drivers.
  • Superior communication, influencing, facilitation and interpersonal skills and experience with experience communicating activities, opportunities and risks with internal and external stakeholders, including third parties and government agencies concerning land access, permitting, and agreements.
  • Proficient in ArcGIS and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, project management, and decision-making skills with high attention to detail.
  • Improvement approach looking at creative and innovative ways to contribute, improve efficiencies, and to lead change for lasting improvements.
  • Willingness to travel up to 30% of the time.
  • Fluency in French (asset).
