Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Operations is Canada’s largest open-pit copper mine and molybdenum operation. HVC produces both copper and molybdenum concentrate through autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding and flotation.

Reporting to the Superintendent, Engineering & Projects, the General Supervisor, Dam Construction, provides leadership and strategic direction to Dam Construction planning and execution teams at Highland Valley Copper (HVC). The General Supervisor leads a diverse team of contractors, staff, and consultants while managing large budgets, schedules, and construction performance. This role is critical in fostering a culture of safety, accountability, sustainability, and continuous improvement while maintaining strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners, including Indigenous communities.

 

To be successful, we are looking for someone with previous leadership and contract management experience combined with technical expertise focused in civil and/or mining operations. Strong verbal and written communication, as well as excellent interpersonal, organization and problem-solving abilities are required. A team-oriented individual with a strong focus on safety, personal responsibility and integrity, and who is highly self-motivated. The candidate must drive operational excellence, optimize resource utilization, and ensure safe, efficient, and compliant execution of dam construction activities. The ability to maintain a positive and flexible attitude while working independently in a fast-paced and dynamic environment is vital in this role.

 

In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead and collaborate with key partners across multiple functions, departments, and management. You will play a key role in the long-term strategies to support and optimize the ongoing operation. These responsibilities support core Engineering and Projects functions for the site.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Safety

  • Promote and reinforce a strong culture of safety leadership.
  • Provide guidance and support to ensure safe work practices across all team.
  • Support hazard and risk assessments and participate in incident investigations.
  • Collaborate with HSE teams to integrate safety into all construction activities.
  • Lead, train, and supervise workers to ensure they are skilled and adhering to best practices.

 

Construction Execution & Resource Planning

  • Lead dam construction planning and execution activities.
  • Oversee development and completion of construction plans, ensuring alignment to scope, schedule, and cost.
  • Read and interpret drawings, plans, and specifications to provide accurate job instructions.
  • Supervise hydraulic sand construction and ensure adherence to deposition plans and specifications.
  • Monitor work execution and ensure compliance with design and quality standards.
  • Ordering and managing the delivery of materials and equipment necessary for the project.

 

Contractor & Workforce Management

  • Manage a workforce of staff, contractors, and consultants ranging from 60-150 personnel.
  • Optimize resource utilization through effective planning and scheduling.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Mentor and develop team members to support growth and performance.

 

Financial & Budget Accountability

  • Support development and management of large construction and project budgets.
  • Accurate and ongoing cost control to track and forecast monthly spend, including invoicing, reconciliation, and accruals; ensuring adherence to budgetary spend and contract management.
  • Monitor and report on budget performance and project commitments.

 

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Establish and maintain transparent communication with stakeholders and leadership teams, providing updates on project timelines, risks, and adjustments.
  • Support contract negotiations and build relationships with First Nations communities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align construction activities with operational requirements.

 

Compliance & Continuous Improvement

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance construction efficiency and performance.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, safety standards, and environmental expectations.
  • Develop and enhance policies, procedures, and standards related to dam construction and relevant Codes.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 8-10 years of supervisory and leadership experience in a mining operation or heavy civil construction.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining or Civil Engineering, or another related field.
  • Registered, or eligible for registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).
  • Strong understanding of mine safety regulations and operational standards.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to lead under pressure.
  • Experience managing large-scale construction projects and contractor workforces.
  • Strong understanding of safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, manage budgets, and deliver projects on schedule.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment and positive interactions with First Nation business representatives is considered a strong asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and other task management software.
  • Familiarity with Maximo, iAuditor, and SuccessFactors is considered an asset.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent).

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.

  • Location: Highland Valley Copper is a 50-minute drive from Kamloops, which has all of the comforts of city living and is also close to Merritt, Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, which all exude a small town community atmosphere.
  • Access: This is a drive-in/drive-out role. Most employees commute to site by car, and carpooling is common among team members.
