Safety Director - NewRange

Job Summary:

Reporting to the General Manager, the Safety Director is responsible for ensuring the effective design and implementation of Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) programs within the scope of NewRange business activities. The incumbent works directly with NewRange Directors, Engineering, and Construction Managers to ensure implementation of systems are consistent with business partner expectations. The role oversees the performance – through either a direct reporting-line or a matrix-manager relationship – of the senior OH&S positions with operational responsibility for OH&S performance embedded within New Range Copper’s OH&S structure. 

The role has the equal responsibility for ensuring that the practices and principles of OH&S ‘in Design’ and ‘in Construction’ are incorporated through all stages of the project in order to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries during both execution of project activities and future post project-completion operations. The overriding focus for OH&S risk management is the identification and effective control of all exposures – across the lifecycle of the project and subsequent operations – with the potential to result in serious harm to people (through occupational health and hygiene exposures, disease, or physical trauma).    


Located in the historic iron range mining region of northeastern Minnesota, NewRange is a joint venture between Teck American Inc. (Teck) and PolyMet Mining Corp (PolyMet) that is advancing two major copper-nickel-platinum-palladium deposits, NorthMet and Mesaba. Project activities range from readying the feasibility stage NorthMet project for a production decision pending clearance of mine permits to advancing the nearby Mesaba project to pre-feasibility studies and permitting.  NewRange is committed to unlocking a new domestic supply chain of critical metals for the transition to a low-carbon economy and positioning Minnesota as a world leader in sustainable mineral resource development.

  • Be a courageous safety leader, leading by example and fostering a proactive safety and sustainability culture based on the common values on health, safety, environment, and communities shared by the asset owners (Teck and Glencore). 
  • Is responsible for the quality and completeness of the project’s OH&S Management Systems and Management Plan.
  • Is responsible to ensure the project has access to the most appropriate tools to enable effective and verified risk management in order to identify and mitigate all ‘major’ and ‘severe’ risks associated with self and contractor-managed activities, equipment and physical, environmental and social exposures in support of successful project delivery. 
  • Champions practices and programs to incorporate partner companies OH&S Goals, and as applicable, broader Sustainability Goals, into project design and execution. 
  • Overseas technical review on OH&S through project stage-gating and studies. 
  • Contributes to defining OH&S strategic priorities that are clearly aligned with broader partner objectives and supporting the articulation internally across NewRange. 
  • Provides leadership and mentorship to OH&S staff, provides recommendations on the allocation of resources and develop and monitor non-project OH&S budgets. 
  • Develops and implement programs to build organizational capacity for evaluation, development and delivery of OH&S (and as applicable risk management) training to project personnel.  
  • Ensures efficient processes are established to record and communicate OH&S and risk management performance within the context of ongoing performance, operational hazard exposures and defined performance targets and measures. 
  • Ensures available resources to respond to critical workplace incidents, personally leads investigations into significant events to provide high-quality post incident counseling, investigation and sharing of learnings. 
  • Liaises with NewRange leadership to ensure that OH&S programs are consistently implemented and that best practices are shared across the group and amongst industry partners; and 
  • Drives a strong sense of professional community for NewRange OH&S practitioners and supports the professional development of the team.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a Health or Safety discipline and/or related area of study preferred.
  • 15+ years of experience in in site safety, supervision, inspection/auditing and risk mitigation in a mining related industry.
  • Certification by an applicable Occupational Health and Safety professional body would be an advantage. 
  • Strong understanding that Safety is a core value and, that our vision is for everyone to go home safe and healthy every day and to embrace the Courageous Safety Leadership culture.
  • Ability to design and introduce occupational health and safety programs and documents. Provide training and support to staff (all levels and functions).   
  • Ability to take courageous decisions to stop or defer work if occupational health and safety conditions are deemed unsatisfactory. 
  • Ability to proactively resolve or seek support as appropriate to resolve safety, occupational health and as applicable, environmental hazards and communities’ issues. 
  • Ability to design, implement, participate in and review an audit/peer review process targeting identified Occupational Health & Safety gaps and controls used in the mitigation of high-risk activities.
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate management review process.
  • Understanding of regulatory framework associated with appropriate local, national, and international regulations.
  • Understanding of the principles of Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems, Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, Risk Mitigation, Critical Controls, Hierarchy of Controls and use of Risk Control Register.
  • Able to analyse incidents using recognized methods (e.g., ICAM) to understand and recommend improved OH&S practices and procedures.
  • Ability to report lead and lag indicators of OH&S activities, exposures and incidents using appropriate corporate systems and tools.
