Safety Coordinator - NewRange

Job Summary:


Reporting to the Safety Director, the Safety Coordinator is responsible for providing support on the development and management of NewRange H&S programs to ensure operational compliance to safety standards, and risk mitigation in order to promote a safety focused culture. The Health & Safety Coordinator is responsible for managing and documenting safety records, promoting a safety focused culture and assisting with coordinating safety training at a site level. 


Overview:


Located in the historic iron range mining region of northeastern Minnesota, NewRange is a joint venture between Teck American Inc. (Teck) and PolyMet Mining Corp (PolyMet) that is advancing two major copper-nickel-platinum-palladium deposits, NorthMet and Mesaba. Project activities range from readying the feasibility stage NorthMet project for a production decision pending clearance of mine permits to advancing the nearby Mesaba project to pre-feasibility studies and permitting.  NewRange is committed to unlocking a new domestic supply chain of critical metals for the transition to a low-carbon economy and positioning Minnesota as a world leader in sustainable mineral resource development.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, leading by example and fostering a proactive safety and sustainability culture based on the common values on health, safety, environment, and communities shared by the asset owners (Teck and Glencore). 
  • Administers safety programs as part of NewRange H&S strategy.
  • Conducts research on a regional level to identify potential risks associated with equipment and physical environment throughout the different stages of exploration; identifies ways to mitigate risks and creates emergency response plans.
  • Participates in H&S Committee, drafting policies and coordinating contract administration.
  • Drafts and documents policies and procedures concerning safety, attendance and disability management and ensures proper distribution of all manuals and updates.
  • Documents critical workplace incidents and investigations within the region, ensuring that records are up to date.
  • Assists in the preparation of safety reports to be remitted on a regular basis to the appropriate regulatory bodies. 
  • Administers long term disability claims and manages records and assists with return-to-work programs.
  • Assists in coordinating safety training for staff. 
  • Continuously seeks opportunities to recognize health and safety hazards and works to manage associated risks in the workplace.
  • Consistently follows NewRange health & safety policies and practice and demonstrates safety leadership to others.
  • Understands the principles of Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Mitigation.
  • Continuously monitors various risk factors associated with project execution and takes appropriate corrective action as required.
  • Makes courageous decisions to stop or defer work if health and safety conditions are deemed unsatisfactory.
  • Proactively resolves or seeks support as appropriate to resolve safety hazards and issues.

Qualifications:

  • Certification or Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety and/or relevant field of study.
  • 5+ years of experience in in site safety in a mining related industry.
  • Certification by an applicable Occupational Health and Safety professional body would be an advantage. 
  • Strong understanding that Safety is a core value and, that our vision is for everyone to go home safe and healthy every day and to embrace a Safety Leadership culture.
  • Understanding of regulatory framework associated with appropriate local, national and international regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience of the Safety Management Systems, Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, Risk Mitigation, Critical Controls, Hierarchy of Controls and use of Risk Control Register.
  • Ability to design and introduce health and safety programs and documents including Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) at project.
  • Ability to report leading and lagging indicators of health and safety activities / conditions / incidents using appropriate systems and tools.
