Lead, Mine Automation

Reporting to the Manager of Autonomy, the Lead, Mine Automation is responsible for contributing to the development and execution of Teck’s Mine Automation strategy, and helps evaluate, select, implement, and optimize specific automation technologies. Teck’s technology strategy is rapidly evolving. An excellent knowledge and awareness of economic modeling, mining processes, and autonomous technology essential.




  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor Teck's commitment to health, safety and environment as a core value
  • Complete and support the evaluation for mine automation technologies through a set of strategic decision-making principles and comprehensive analysis that establish optimal implementation strategies based on safety, technology maturity, financial value, ease of implementation, and strategic future considerations
  • Evaluate and help prioritize critical external developments and emerging mine automation technologies through simple, rigorous, and consistent valuations in order to understand impact and opportunity
  • Assist with the transition from strategies, to plans, to execution implementations/pilots at site level by providing comprehensive support and facilitation to groups of stakeholders
  • Assist with the creation of centralized process driven “one Teck” approach to transferring learnings from actual project implementation and optimization into the improvement of other deployments to accelerate the pace and quality of expansion
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships by encouraging effective cross-functional dialogue to drive greater coordination and collaboration across the company
  • Monitor and report progress on key strategies and projects across Teck through defined and endorsed processes in order to keep key stakeholders abreast on progress as well as drive accountability
  • Establish Teck wide accurate and relevant metrics for autonomous systems performance including but not limited to safety, productivity, efficiency, and cost.
  • Assist sites in identifying and driving productivity improvement initiatives in a pragmatic, measurable, process driven way to maximize pace of autonomy value capture
  • Expected travel to Teck Resources Ltd. sites ranges from 20-30%.




  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Preferably Mining), Commerce, Business, or related field
  • Minimum seven years of mining or industrial experience and a solid understanding of mining industry fundamentals
  • Change Agent: experience and understanding of effective change management
  • Creative: comfortable with working in ambiguous and unstructured settings
  • Analytical: able to frame analysis, design models, assess data quality and sufficiency to arrive at conclusions
  • Self-manager: motivated self-starter, able to work under minimal supervision, and be able to manage several tasks simultaneously
  • Influencer: able to work effectively and build relationships with people from across Teck
  • Bias for action: seeks to move from analysis to action as quickly as possible
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Operational experience with mining automation would be considered an asset
