Assistant Controller (Temporary)

Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller provides financial leadership and is instrumental in forming accounting strategies.  This position will be responsible for assisting with the period end close for the company while maintaining full compliance with all SOX control policies and procedures and collecting documentation to ensure the SOX controls checklists are consistently complied with.  The incumbent reviews and interprets financial results, coordinates with internal and external auditors, lawyers, government ministries and consultants to determine the financial impact on Red Dog Operations.  The successful candidate will be a fully engaged member of the Finance team.  

This position will be based in the Anchorage Teck office 

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Establish and promote a Safe and Healthy working environment; conform with Teck Corporate and Red Dog Operations Safety & Health and environmental Management programs
  • Overall responsibility for internal and external financial reporting and ensures that accounting policies and procedures are consistent with corporate policies and in accordance with Financial Accounting Standards and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • This includes ensuring Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) compliance within the group, including the assessment of and compliance to accounting procedures
  • Review and Approve Wire Transfers (second review), ensuring accuracy and account coding while maintaining and increasing the ability to earn discounts for early payments
  • Review and Approve new vendors, ensuring all necessary paperwork is complete and correct and evidence is maintained within GenCID
  • Review and approve New Hires GenCID access, ensuring new hires are given appropriate access to their position
  • Evaluation and reconciliation of “Goods Received Not Invoiced” clearing account
  • Review all GenCID systemic changes with Digital Services team, ensuring all system changes are correctly tested and necessary to the business
  • Evaluate, review, and approve all journal entries relating to Operating Expenses, ensuring all accruals are appropriate and well documented
  • Conduct Operating Cost review, actual to budget (AGRPC review), as required by SOX control documentation.  Identify variances plus or minus $25k and ensure correct accounting treatment.  Where needed, issue instructions for further clarity or corrections, as needed
  • Conduct Balance Sheet review of all activity in Balance Sheet accounts (TB review), as required by SOX control documentation.  Where needed, issue instructions for further clarity or corrections, as needed
  • Assist in preparation of Cost Review meetings and documentation, following through with preparation of Cost Review reports and presentations
  • Review and approve all monthly reconciliations for each Balance Sheet account
  • Ensure all SOX documentation is maintained monthly and provide to Auditors when required
  • Assist in quarterly audits, utilizing SOX control lists to ensure sufficient control documentation is available
  • Develop & Maintain Budget Templates in excel and PowerBI folders
  • Prepare full Budget excel plan document, ensuring formulaic integrity, input/output accuracy and allowing for ease of input and review
  • Assist controller in Preparation of all Budget presentations, uploads and reports required to clearly communicate Budget goals and results
  • Maintain all SOX narratives and library for Red Dog
  • Maintain all checklists for Red Dog finance, assisting all team members in planning and coordinating the work to achieve timely and accurate reporting
  • Maintain control for all Physical statistics for Red Dog Mine and ensure timely and accurate reporting

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in business administration, accounting, finance or Economics is required
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in Finance with an emphasis on auditing
  • Strong analytical skills with an expert level of Excel spreadsheet skills
  • Full understanding of SOX legislation and documentation requirements
  • High performing individual with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Highly proficient in MS Office, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Scheduler
  • MS PowerBI skills would be an asset
  • Energetic and focused individual demonstrates a thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS).  Respected professional with a proven track record as a strategic leader within the financial disciplines.  Proven ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing deliverables with minimal guidance
  • Demonstrated commitment to ethical management behaviors and business and reporting practices
  • Strong interpersonal, writing, verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and strong attention to detail is required
