Senior Communications Specialist - (Temporary 20 Month Position)

The Senior Communications Specialist will report to the Director, Communications, and be responsible for planning, writing, coordinating, and project managing strategic communications that drive employee engagement in Teck initiatives and enhance the employee experience. This is a temporary 20-month position.

 

The Senior Communications Specialist will work across all levels of the organization, and coordinate the work of other internal resources, including other members of the Sustainability and External Affairs team and external consultants as necessary, to develop and deliver employee communications and engagement materials.

 

In addition to a demonstrated passion for employee communications, the Senior Communications Specialist will be a strategic thinker with outstanding writing, project management and relationship building skills, thorough knowledge and understanding of all media used in organizational communication, strong process orientation, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Develop and execute communications strategies that drive employee engagement in corporate priorities, business objectives and corporate citizenship initiatives, including writing, project team/senior leadership engagement, and project management
  • Lead the development and publication of Teck’s employee and retiree magazines, including writing, editing and project management
  • Lead all aspects of Teck’s internal announcement program, including working across all levels of the organization to develop content and secure necessary senior management approvals, coordinating translation, and dissemination
  • Develop and deliver communications materials to senior management and general managers that support business unit and operation-level employee engagement, including video production, presentation development, senior leadership engagement, and project management
  • Participate as a member of and provide support to the crisis communications team, as required
  • Provide strategic communications advice to senior leaders on initiatives that impact employees
  • Provide writing support for a wide range of digital, print, social and presentation applications
  • Provide support to projects and initiatives undertaken by Corporate Affairs, as required
  • Provide support to other major projects and initiatives at Teck, as required

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Minimum 8-10 years’ experience in the field of corporate communications, media or public relations.
  • Post secondary education in the area of communications, public relations, or a relevant field is considered an asset
  • Proficiency in Spanish is considered an asset

 

Technical Competencies

  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong demonstrable ability to distill complex information for communication to a range of audiences
  • Solid project management skills, and the ability to set and manage multiple priorities based on relative importance and urgency
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of all media used in organizational communication
  • Strong process orientation, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Strong demonstrable computer skills, in particular with Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Ability to work across all levels of the organization, and coordinate the work of other internal resources
  • Must be flexible and perform well in a team environment
