Principal Innovation, Exploration & Geoscience

As part of the Exploration and Geoscience (E&G) Management Team, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing E&G’s innovation portfolio. The portfolio will span the entire domain of the group’s activities – from greenfield and brownfields operations to orebody knowledge initiatives – and the candidate will work closely with project teams to assess, prioritize, trial and implement solutions that deliver significant value to our business.  The candidate will be responsible for creating strategic vision and focus to technology and innovation opportunities and will provide senior management with feedback to incorporate into E&G’s strategic objectives on an annual basis.  
 

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures

  • Liaise with senior management and senior technical personnel to define areas of strategic focus for innovation across E&G which are linked to group priorities and updated as required

  • Create and maintain a register of innovation opportunities to consider for implementation across E&G’s business

  • Lead technical teams in the evaluation and application of practical, innovative geoscience solutions to ensure maximum value capture and risk management at Teck Operations and Advanced Projects

  • Build and maintain relationships with corporate technology and innovation personnel to explore synergies in value creation and ensure strong alignment with Teck’s base metal and Cu Growth teams

  • Work with Exploration technical and operational leaders to evaluate innovation opportunities from target generation through to drill testing and make concrete actionable recommendations Senior Management

  • Develop and present value-based justifications for implementing enhancements to Teck’s existing exploration and geoscience workflows or adopting new data acquisition, modelling and estimation techniques

  • Support QB2 Operational Geoscience working group to progress existing geoscience initiatives and identify new opportunities

  • Develop and maintain an E&G innovation initiatives status dashboard

  • Provide strategic and technical input to departmental budgets

  • Use effective change management practices to ensure buy-in from all key stakeholders

  • Coordinate and liaise with consultants, service providers and software developers to evaluate the applicability and effectiveness of technology solutions

  • Oversee group-level communication to build awareness and engagement on innovation activities

  • Develop and maintain a vast industry network with technical geoscience leaders and technology providers amongst industry peers, service

Qualifications:

  • Have at least ten years of mineral industry experience, including exploration, resource, mining and service providers

  • A post-secondary degree in Geological sciences or Engineering and currently hold or be eligible to apply for professional designation in BC

  • Be thoroughly familiar with practices, methods and concepts of drilling, geological modelling, resource estimation and operational geoscience and be able to apply principles to exploration- through resource stage programs/operations

  • Project Management Experience; Experience managing external consultants and suppliers, including defining scopes of work, establishing contracts, cost control and ensuring delivery of services according to the agreed scope and timelines

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 

  • Demonstrated understanding of how geoscience impacts mining value drivers

  • Exposure to mine engineering principles, metallurgical and processing techniques, and environmental and material stewardship considerations

  • Proactive and motivated collaborative team player

  • Fluent in the English language; competency in Spanish is an asset

  • Commitment to safety and environmental protection is a core value
