Director, Sustainability Integration and Performance

Reporting to the Senior Vice President Sustainability & External Affairs, the Director is a leader with significant experience providing strategic direction in the areas of sustainability, project management, planning, performance measurement and innovation.  They will mature the Sustainability and External Affairs team’s (SEA) capabilities to ensure the successful achievement of Teck’s Sustainability Strategy and SEA’s strategic initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Integrate the Sustainability Plan and monitor performance including ensuring implementation plans have been developed for each Sustainability Goal, particularly for those that require a multi-disciplinary approach. 
  • Provide an integrated view of the sustainability program and collaborate with sites and other business units to ensure the plan is well understood throughout the organization by ensuring sites and/or business units have clear visibility in a timely manner to allow for integration into their budget cycles.
  • Work closely with subject matter experts and business unit leadership to support the implementation of their sites’ sustainability plans. 
  • Identify and evaluate emerging sustainability trends to ensure continuous improvement for Teck’s sustainability planning efforts.
  • Support efforts to ensure sustainability projects are appropriately valued and integrated through the capital budgeting process.
  • Support approval mechanisms for sustainability projects.
  • Facilitate planning for Sustainability & External Affairs including manage the cadence of the annual planning cycle to ensure integration with planning cycles in other areas of the business.
  • Support Sustainability Innovation through integration of RACE21 initiatives in support of Teck’s Sustainability Strategy objectives.

 

Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of experience stewarding sustainability strategies from goals setting and planning through to implementation taking on progressively increasing responsibility. Experience in an extractive industry with an international footprint is preferred.
  • An entrepreneurial and innovative individual who can articulate an inspiring vision and set challenging goals that will stretch the organization and push boundaries within the industry.
  • A track record of creating successful implementations plans that balance the desire/need for action against the organization’s capacity for change.
  • Strong analytical skills and capacity to identify risks, analyze information from a variety of sources and generate solutions that align with the organization’s overall strategy. Comfortable working with ambiguity and uncertainty, he/she is able to adapt nimbly and lead others through complex situations.
  • Ability to rapidly review, assess, and provide recommendations on sustainability-related technical, legal and regulatory information as it relates to existing operations, new projects and potential acquisitions, typically in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Strong financial modelling skills with knowledge of standard and accepted budgeting techniques.  
  • An individual with a high degree of integrity who acts in a transparent and consistent manner while always considering what is best for the organization.
  • A strong verbal and written communicator who can tailor their message effectively to engage a range of audiences.
  • Fluency in Spanish an asset.
