Acting Manager, Social Performance (14 Months Temporary)

Reporting to the Director, Social Performance, the Acting Manager, Social Performance (Manager) supports key aspects of Teck’s company-wide initiatives dedicated to ensuring leading practices and performance in the areas of community relationships including the management of associated risks and benefits. This position is part of a broader team responsible for oversight of social performance, Indigenous relations, and community development.

 

The Acting Manager contributes subject matter expertise on social performance issues and leads the development of key tools, training, and technologies to facilitate the implementation of Teck’s Social Performance Standard and procedures at our sites globally. At the corporate level, the Manager develops and maintains working relationships with key corporate collaborators including teams responsible for Environmental Management, Government Affairs, Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) Systems and Corporate Affairs to support the integration of social performance into Teck’s culture and business processes across the different geographies and throughout the mine life cycle.

 

The Manager also provides leadership on behalf of Teck in promoting leading practices throughout our business functions and across the mining and metals industry. 

 

The position is based in Vancouver with occasional travel to sites and communities.

Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Supports the sites in the implementation of selected aspects and procedures of Teck’s Social Performance Standard (SPS) including feedback mechanisms, stakeholder mapping, analysis and engagement, social impact and incident management.
  • Leads regular reviews and updates of social performance procedures, and coordinates quarterly and annual reporting on key aspects of the SPS.
  • Provides oversight to the management of social incidents across Teck sites, including support for investigations, identification and implementation of corrective actions, monitoring and reporting.
  • Works collaboratively with the corporate Environment team and sites on the implementation of the community-facing aspects of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management, and delivery of the operational sustainability bonus program.
  • Coordinates Social Performance functional requirements of Teck Enterprise Risk Management.
  • Coordinates the Teck Social Performance Community of Practice.
  • Leads all aspects of the preparation of data, reports, and case studies for external reports such as sustainability and annual reports as well as disclosures for ESG agencies.
  • Supervises one co-op student.

Qualifications

  • 10 years of relevant professional work experience in the field of social performance or related fields, with specific experience in the mining sector. Operational experience desired.
  • A post-graduate degree in social sciences, sustainability, planning or other related fields is desired.
  • Demonstrated expertise and success in crafting, implementing and evaluating social performance strategies and programs, in particular related to social risk and impact management, communities of interest mapping and analysis, community engagement and feedback mechanisms.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in implementing international principles andstandard processes related to social performance in the extractives sector, e.g., International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), Mining Association of Canada Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) and Copper Mark.
  • Experience working in an international corporate environment, including supporting executive-level decision-making, and contributing to matrix-management environments. 
  • Experience leading all aspects of the implementation of corporate initiatives across multiple internal collaborators.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills, experience in training and presenting, and experience in influencing organizational and cultural change.
  • Strong research,analytical and writing skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong planning and project management skills.
  • Spanish language skills are an asset.

Salary Range: $132000.0 - $163000.0

 

The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
