Senior Process Engineer, Coal and Energy

Reporting to the Section Leader, Coal and Energy, the Senior Process Engineer/Metallurgist is accountable for leading coal and oil sands processing technology development projects, participating in the execution of new coal and oil sands technology implementation projects, leading or participating in process definition test work and ore body process interpretation for new mine projects as well as expansions and/or modifications to existing operations, providing technical consulting services to sites, using technical networks within and external to Teck to develop solutions to Teck’s coal and oil sands processing challenges, and supporting the on-going development of a healthy coal and oil sands processing technology and services project portfolio. The position will be based at Applied Research and Technology (ART) in Trail, BC with varying amounts of domestic and international travel as required by portfolio, project and personal / personnel development needs.


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Establish and promote the maintenance and continual improvement of a safe, healthy, and environmentally-responsible working environment through a courageous personal commitment to ART’s over-arching policies and Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Management System as well as EHS policies and management systems at off-site locations.
  • Act as a technically-competent coal and oil sands process engineer with developing subject matter expertize in some key areas of coal and oil sands processing technology projects by clarifying issues, identifying and screening potential solutions, resolving uncertainties associated with promising solutions, and demonstrating the efficacy of the selected solutions at bench-scale to pilot- or demonstration-scale as required to optimize and de-risk selected solutions.
  • Lead smaller coal or oil sands processing technology projects through the stages outlined above with key success factors aligned to the project business case, including health and safety, environmental compliance, technical outcomes, schedule, cost, and quality. 
  • Manage and coordinate operational activities with multiple groups, including internal technology development teams, equipment manufacturers and technology providers, engineering companies, on-site contractors, and subject matter experts.
  • Lead or participate as a key team member in process definition test work and ore body process interpretation to generate ore body knowledge for new projects as well as expansions and/or modifications to existing operations. 
  • Work with geologists to select samples for test work to ensure proper representation of plant feed types and to assess mineralogical variability.
  • Interpret metallurgical results with context from geological models to generate integrated ore body process performance models.
  • Develop and support on-going maintenance and adaption of simulation models to help guide process design and plant optimization.
  • Lead or co-lead small or support larger techno-economic studies, including scoping or prefeasibility engineering activities, to evaluate and rank potential technology solutions.
  • Lead small teams or support aspects of technology implementation execution projects for new coal and oil sands processing technologies such as detailed process engineering and/or commissioning and initial optimization phases.
  • Lead small teams or support in-the-field optimization studies and test work to make recommendations for improved operation of existing mineral processing assets.
  • Provide both detailed and high-level consulting services to sites and project teams on issues spanning the coal and oil sands processing spectrum, including serving as a qualified person when required and provide support to internal governance practices.
  • Use existing networks within and external to Teck to clarify issues and develop solutions to Teck’s mineral processing challenges. 
  • Stay current on minerals, coal, and oil sands processing issues and leading-edge technologies through literature reviews, site visits, conferences, and regular interactions with key vendors, subject matter experts, and operations practioners.
  • Participate in external open innovation/technology development organizations and projects as requested, including project leadership roles.
  • Support the on-going development of a healthy coal and oil sands processing technology and services project portfolio by maintaining regular communication with key Teck personnel at sites and support/leadership teams to identify and clarify emerging issues. 
  • Provide input into developing high-level initial project/program plans with associated resource needs and ranking of potential projects as part of the ART technology portfolio management process.
  • Effectively communicate key messages and recommendation through authoring of high-quality reports and delivery of effective presentations to all levels of the company.
  • Assist in the development of other technical staff and technologists at ART and other Teck sites by acting as a technical mentor/coach and knowledge transferrer and networker.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.


  • Graduate degree, with a strong preference for a post-graduate degree, in engineering or a related field relevant to mineral processing technologies.
  • More than six (6) years of relevant, progressive experience.
  • Should have or be eligible for professional registration with relevant organization.
  • Working knowledge of minerals, coal, and oil sands processing challenges faced by a diversified multinational mining company and the potential viable solutions to the challenges is required. 
  • Good working knowledge of coal and oil sands processing as well as a working knowledge of the activities and business of mining and mining sustainability is desirable.
  • Experience in technology development, including acting as a subject matter expert and technical project manager for smaller technology projects is required along with advanced data analysis and problem solving as well as emerging critical and conceptual thinking skills. 
  • Should have experience in techno-economic evaluation of technology solutions as well as change management. 
  • Experience in operations and/or capital projects execution is desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Proficient or demonstrated ability to learn software tools required for the role, including MS Office, MS Project, and process modelling platforms.
  • Emerging ability to lead and support highly-collaborative multi-disciplinary teams with a focus on delivering value as well as promoting sharing of best practices across operations and projects. 
  • Experience in resource allocation, project planning, and budgeting for technical projects is required.
  • Emerging experience with organizational dynamics and good conflict resolution skills.
  • Highly-motivated self-starter with the ability to work under minimal supervision with managing several priorities/projects simultaneously to meet firm deadlines.
  • Ability to travel frequently and flexibility to successfully work in different sites and offices that Teck operates in.
