Requirements

Successful candidates must be motivated self-starters, able to work under minimal supervision and be able to manage several projects simultaneously. The positions may require working outdoors in all weather conditions and the ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles in mountainous terrain. You will also be required to have steel-toed boots (which must reach at least above the ankle) before commencing work. If you have prescription eye glasses or contacts, you are required to have prescription safety glasses or will need to request safety glasses that fit over your eye glasses prior to your start date.

The positions also require strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office is necessary. A working knowledge of Microsoft Access, AutoCAD, or SolidWorks would be advantageous.

Preference is given to students enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering program depending on the position.

All students will be required to complete pre-employment drug testing prior to commencing work.

Responsibilities

The Mechanical Engineer co-op students hired by Teck Resources Ltd. are given the opportunity to practice their skills in all aspects of Maintenance Department. Some of the responsibilities of a Mechanical Engineer co-op student are as follows:

  • Involvement in the health and safety programs of Teck Resources Ltd. to ensure that everyone on site goes home safe and healthy every day
  • Reliability Maintenance – Root Cause/Failure analysis, identifying problematic failures
  • Project Management - coordinate maintenance projects relating to plant, mine and maintenance expansions and modifications
  • Organize, schedule and monitor the status of maintenance projects
  • Control the cost of maintenance projects and identify inefficiencies in order to offer cost effective solutions
  • Produce detailed designs and drawings for mechanical projects on site such as upgrades to mobile mining equipment or building facilities, and mechanical drafting using AutoCAD and/or Solidworks
  • Plan and schedule various tasks for maintenance shutdown work
  • Major capital project work during construction phase, work with Project team with the operational readiness, training programs and commissioning
  • Work with skilled trades to design/build lifting devices and other aids for maintenance
  • Support reporting and other duties as required
