Environmental Engineer/Scientist


Trail, BC, CA

Reporting to the Section Leader, Environmental Technology, the Environmental Engineer/Scientist is accountable for leading or supporting large environmental technology development and technical services projects and supporting the on-going development of a strong environmental technology project portfolio. The incumbent will make technical contributions to projects, with a focus on industrial water treatment. The incumbent should have a developing working knowledge of technology development practices, good data analysis and problem solving skills, and emerging critical and conceptual thinking abilities. The position will be based at Technical Services in Trail, BC with varying amounts of domestic and international travel as required.


  • Act as a Courageous Safety Leader to establish and promote the maintenance and continual improvement of a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible working environment.
  • Work with subject matter experts in key areas for environmental technology projects.
  • Lead environmental technology and operational/optimization projects with key success factors aligned to the project business case, including health and safety, environmental compliance, technical outcomes, schedule, cost, and quality.
  • Support operational activities with multiple groups, including internal technology development teams, equipment manufacturers and technology providers, engineering companies, on-site contractors, and subject matter experts.
  • Provide both consulting services to sites and project teams on issues across the environmental spectrum.
  • Stay current on environmental issues, leading-edge industrial water treatment technologies, and environmental engineering through literature reviews, site visits, conferences, and regular interactions with vendors and subject matter experts.
  • Effectively communicate key messages and recommendations through reports and effective presentations to all levels of the company.


  • Graduate degree in Environmental Engineering or a comparable combination of post-secondary education and experience. Should have 2 to 12 years relevant experience. Should have or be eligible for professional registration with a relevant organization.
  • Developing knowledge of the activities and business of mining and mineral processing is desirable.
  • Some experience in technical project management is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. The ability to work in Spanish is an asset.
  • Ability to support highly collaborative multi-disciplinary teams with a focus on delivering value.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with the ability to work under minimal supervision with managing several priorities/projects simultaneously to meet firm deadlines.
  • Ability to travel and to work in different sites and offices that Teck operates.
