Operational Readiness Coordinator, Environment (Temporary)

Reporting to the Superintendent, Environment Water Operations, the Operational Readiness Coordinator, Environment is responsible for providing project and Operational Readiness (OR) support for Teck’s upcoming water treatment projects. This support includes providing regulatory, environmental risk, and technical support to Teck’s Project Development Group, Regulatory Approvals group, and Water Treatment Operations group as the projects advance from design and engineering phases through permitting and construction and into the commissioning and operational phases. This position will be temporary through the commissioning of the Fording River South Active Water Treatment Facility (projected through to Q1 2021) with the potential to extend beyond that timeframe dependent on other water projects.   


The position requires a broad base of scientific knowledge, technical skills, and environmental project management experience.



  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Participate in project hazard assessments, and conduct document and engineering design reviews
  • Develop and review operational plans and management plans
  • Review and provide input, from a compliance perspective, on treatment plant control narratives
  • Develop and implement data management systems
  • Review baseline monitoring data and reports developed by consultants in coordination with the Social Environment and Regulatory Approvals (SERA) team
  • Develop, review, and implement sampling and on site lab monitoring  procedures
  • Develop, review, and implement site specific compliance and environmental monitoring programs
  • Coordinate baseline monitoring and supporting monitoring programs with SERA and Regional Water Monitoring Program teams
  • Manage construction support including on-site audits
  • Complete pre-commissioning, commissioning, and ramp up support
  • Develop and deliver audits and inspections of systems
  • Understand applicable commitments, permits and associated requirements to inform management decisions and actions
  • Build internal working relationships for the purposes of facilitating environmental education and compliance
  • Develop working relationships with government agencies, Aboriginal groups, and other local communities of interest to support understanding of Teck’s activities
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned or required



  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Environmental Science discipline, such as Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Geography, Forestry, or Agriculture preferred
  • Consideration of Diploma in Environmental Technology with relevant work experience
  • Minimum five years’ experience in the field of environmental compliance or monitoring specific to mining
  • Experience with environmental data management software (GIS/EQuIS) and proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite®; especially Excel
  • Technical knowledge of relevant environmental and waste legislation, standards, and effective industry practices
  • Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Excellent project management experience with a track record that includes management and technical support for multiple environmental projects
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced team work environment
  • Must possess effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, and the ability to coordinate the efforts of others to accomplish objectives
  • Strong analytical and decision making abilities with a proven capacity in practical problem solving
  • Ability to work productively with nominal supervision and work independently in remote locations
  • Multi-tasking competing priorities to see projects to completion while addressing any challenges along the way
