Lead, Environment (Temporary 12-Months)

Reporting to the Senior Coordinator, Environment, the Lead, Environment is responsible for environmental monitoring and reporting, influencing the improvement of compliance performance at site. You will work with a team of professionals who are responsible for delivery of environmental compliance programs across the operation.

Lastly, we require an individual with strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively connect with internal and external parties to identify and resolve issues.

 

In this role you have the opportunity to work on a site in care and maintenance, engaging on diverse projects with departments across our operations and the Sparwood Business Unit. Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Lead and supervise environmental management and monitoring programs and projects required to maintain compliance with laws, permits, and Teck’s sustainability initiatives, objectives and requirements, which may include water quality and use, air, climate change, and waste management depending on that position’s focus
  • Prepare various professional reports, applications, and submissions for internal and government audiences
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with business unit teams, government agencies, Indigenous groups, and other local communities of interest
  • Lead the water management planning processes for the mine into closure, as well as surface water, groundwater, hydrology, and pit dewatering programs
  • Participate in business unit environmental working groups to develop best management practices and guidance to standardize delivery and implementation of environmental projects, programs, and compliance tools
  • Manage contractors to ensure work is being conducted safely and in accordance with project scope, including adherence to company Environmental, Health, Safety, and Community, and Environmental Protection Work Plans
  • Coordinate environmental inspections, respond to findings and coordinate action response plans
  • Support the Environmental Management System (EMS), including managing audits and inspections, maintaining conformance to the Teck Coal EMS Manual standards, identifying risks and opportunities, and administer internal environmental compliance tracking tools

 

Qualifications:

  • Science or Engineering degree in an environmental-related field or other related subject area
  • Experience in environmental management, in the natural resource sector
  • Experience supervising or leading employees and contractors
  • Solid understanding and experience in water, air, waste management, contaminated site remediation and reclamation, including technical writing, data analysis, interpretation, and reporting
  • Demonstrated ability and experience with environmental monitoring databases such as EQuIS
  • Technical knowledge of relevant federal and provincial environmental laws and policies
  • Knowledge of environmental best management practices and systems, compliance or auditing would be an asset
