Hydrotechnical Specialist (Temporary - 1 Year)

Reporting to the Lead, Regional Water Management, the Hydrotechnical Specialist is responsible for the development and implementation of various environmental compliance corrective action plans related to water management infrastructure across our Coal Operations in BC and AB. Corrective action plans require water management infrastructure assessments, hydraulic structure design, construction monitoring, development of preventive maintenance programs, site reconnaissance and data collection, tracking of water Key Performance Indicators. The role will transition into the implementation of an overall environmental performance strategy for water management infrastructure at the four operational sites.

 

To be successful in this role, we are looking for someone with a strong technical background in hydrology and hydraulics, water quality assessments, sediment transport and modelling, field investigations and construction monitoring. The person also requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to build relationships across multiple teams. We require an individual who has strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, who is self-motivated with excellent project management skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Collaborate closely with various groups and disciplines to develop and implement a variety of environmental compliance corrective and preventive action plans related to water management infrastructure
  • Support problem solving across various groups and disciplines
  • Track and report progress against targets
  • Manage risks through effective implementation of site water management
  • Understand operational water quality, infrastructure risk, and develop feasible mitigation in coordination with partners based on permitted mine life
  • Support strong relationships with government agencies, Aboriginal groups, and local communities of interest
  • Ensure regulatory commitments relating to Water Management Plans and Water Management Facilities are met
  • Provide senior level technical review of permitting applications and regulatory submissions
  • Complete capital budget planning for water projects and ensure project management standard methodologies are applied
  • Prepare and review data and reports to meet regulatory and other commitments, including presentation of technical information to a variety of audiences
  • Support the development of Request for Proposals related to water infrastructure design and construction

 

Qualifications:

  • Engineering or Science Degree in water resources engineering, civil, geochemistry, hydrology, or a related field
  • Relevant professional accreditation, such as P.Eng. or P.Geo.
  • Minimum five years of demonstrated ability working in an industrial environment; mining or oil and gas is preferred
  • Strong experience water resources management
  • Experience in project management and delivery
  • Experience leading the development and implementation of water management programs, and risk evaluation of water quality and quantity
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial mining water practices and regulatory compliance
