Job Description

  • Location: Sparwood, B.C. 
  • Duration: 8 Months 
  • Positions Available: 1
  • Intake Date: Monday, May 8, 2023 
  • Minimum Qualifications: Must currently be enrolled in a recognized and accredited Canadian post-secondary institution throughout the duration of the co-op term. You must also be returning to a post-secondary institution after the co-op term is completed. Depending on the needs and location of the team, you will need to work PST or MDT or relocate to a specific office (Vancouver or site-based) 
  • Desired Background: For this position, we are specifically targeting students who have a background in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or Natural Resources Management 

 

Role Summary  

Based in Sparwood, BC the Environmental Co-op – Project Development Group (PDG) Projects has responsibility for providing support with the environmental compliance and performance of Teck’s PDG activities, supporting each operating jurisdiction to manage their environmental risks to successfully execute exploration programs in accordance with the relevant Teck policies, procedures and legislation within their jurisdictions.   

 

A key component of the role will be to provide support and help implement the PDG’s teams’ environmental practices in the places of operation to achieve desired corporate goals and to be the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for documenting and inputting data on projects.   

 

The role includes active responsibility for ongoing project management commitments of the Teck Resources Ltd and Teck Coal PDG Projects, ensuring compliance with all relevant mining and environmental legislation, Teck’s policies and JV reporting requirements.   

 

Reporting Relationships:  

The position reports to the Environmental Lead, HSEC, Project Development Group, with a matrix reporting relationship to the Director of PDG HSEC, and Director of Water Projects. Collaboration and pro-active communication with PDG Group managers & environmental leads will be fundamental to the role. 

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the health and safety programs of Teck to ensure that everyone on site goes home safe and healthy every day  
  • Ensure all standard Environmental practices are achieving the highest level of environmental stewardship and compliance  
  • Update and manage environmental data and reporting in our Environmental Data Management System (EMS), EQuiS and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)  
  • Assist with on-site research and development activities as well as monitoring, sampling, inspecting, and reporting for environmental reclamation and geotechnical compliance  
  • Project Management tasks, including safety and contractor supervision, and project planning  
  • Involvement in wildlife monitoring projects, and Biodiversity Management Plan updates  
  • Create and evaluate innovative ideas and technologies to help improve the way we do business  
  • May be delegated specific tasks and responsibilities for aspects of environmental management and compliance 

Qualifications

  • Working towards an Undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science or Natural Resources Management 
  • Previous experience with GIS is required 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)  
  • Motivated self-starters with the ability to manage several projects simultaneously  
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic work environment with a willingness to work outdoors and able to operate vehicles at our operations, in various weather conditions and terrain  
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills with a capability to communicate complex ideas to all levels and partners  
  • All students will be required to complete pre-employment drug testing prior to commencing work. 
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
