Section Leader, Projects and Engineering

General Accountability


Reporting to the Manager, Technical Services Richmond (TSR) the Section Leader, P&E is accountable for the activities of the Process Development, Engineering and Operations teams at TSR and across TSP as required. The incumbent is responsible for leading a team in the design, planning, and execution of technical projects for corporate and operations clients of TSR primarily involving process engineering.  The role develops, collaborates and supports in the execution of short and long term plans to drive excellence and innovation in process engineering aligned with business strategies and evolving needs.


Nature and Scope of Position


Develop and strengthen the process and project engineering capabilities of the TSR group. Plan and execute projects that support the growth, improvement and sustainability of Teck’s business through the application of process engineering technologies.


Specific Accountabilities


  • Constantly maintain, implement and demonstrate Teck’s commitment to health, safety, environmental and community (HSEC) protection as a core value. Establish and maintain a culture of responsibility and technical excellence.

  • Develop and execute technical projects at TSR or other Teck sites that support the growth, improvement and sustainability of Teck’s Business Units. Ensure TSR projects address the current needs of the business and future needs are anticipated and supported through associated strategies (e.g. research, innovation, workforce). Ensure that clients are kept abreast of project progress, monitor and control program costs against the budget.

  • Develop and execute test work programs to enable process flowsheet design, including bench scale, pilot plant and demonstration plant programs.

  • Develop engineering studies and reports such as conceptual and trade-off studies, prefeasibility and feasibility estimates by either producing in-house or by managing external resources within cost, schedule and quality parameters.

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with Teck operations’ staff and other technical stakeholders.

  • Develop TSR staff using People Central as a framework for coaching and mentoring discussions.  Enable and make recommendations for recruiting, promotion, job evaluation, development, transfers and performance management of employees.  

  • Work as a member of the TSR and Technical Services Processing leadership groups to develop a strategy and a 3-5 year plan for development and growth of the Process Engineering and Project Execution section.  Use the strategic plan to set objectives for continuous improvement in the efficiency, productivity and quality of the section.

  • Establish, implement and continuously improve leading practices in process engineering and project management for small technical projects. These will align with the broader scope of Teck’s practice standards and the industry’s practice standards and guidelines;

  • Manage the workload of the execution staff and foster a team environment to make most efficient use of TSR and external resources.  

  • Review and author high quality technical reports and presentations for Teck clients clearly outlining the conclusions and recommendations arising from technical projects in addition to the associated value or business impact where applicable.

  • Develop and apply theoretical and scientific understanding in process engineering to technical projects.  Act as a technical consultant to internal clients in the field of process engineering and project management of small technical projects.

  • Stay current on applicable leading edge science technology and innovation through literature reviews and technical conferences.  Establish and maintain a broad international network of internal experts, industry contacts, research partners, contractor-consultants, technology vendors and universities to support technical programs.

  •  Promote the development and use of TSR’s capabilities in process engineering and technical project management to identify improvement opportunities at existing operations.


Technical Competencies


       •   Have a minimum of 10 years of advanced process engineering experience, ideally in the base metals hydrometallurgical processing industry;

  • Hold at minimum a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical/Process Engineering, Post Graduate degree(s) preferable;
  • Be registered with, or eligible to register with, the relevant accreditation body(ies); 

  • Be thoroughly familiar with practices, methods and concepts in process engineering and project management and be able to apply these principles from idea generation through to advanced project execution and operational support;

  • Operational exposure at a plant superintendent or metallurgist level with startup and commissioning experience would be an asset.

  • Strong attention to detail and processes; creative and innovative with excellent abilities to integrate all engineering disciplines in decision making; 

  • A student of the industry who possess, or can develop, the background and expertise to manage the analysis and selection of technology and innovative practice as it applies to process engineering;

  • Advanced written and oral English. Spanish language proficiency is an asset. Superior writing, presentation and interpersonal skills.
