The Tailings Engineer will regularly supervise and handle consultants and contractors, and coordinate with other operational groups, provide on-site project and construction management and applies technical engineering expertise to projects and operations. They shall conduct all work in compliance with Teck’s Tailings Governance, Tailings & Water Retaining Structure Guidance, Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management, and Alaska Dam Safety Guidelines.
Reporting to the Senior Engineer, Tailings
Responsibilities:
- Closely enforce safety protocols, ensuring the health and well-being of all employees
- Complete detailed measurements, analyses, and reports to drive detailed project outcomes
- Collaborate effectively with multi-functional teams to optimize resource use
- Provide ongoing technical support for tailings and water management processes
- Develop and implement engineering solutions for tailings impoundment operations
- Coordination and management of bathymetric surveys, beach surveillance surveys, tailings fugitive dust management activities, and tailings deposition field activities
- Coordinate short- and long-term projects, ensuring they meet site objectives
- Project management on a range of project and activities. Define project scopes, landmarks and success criteria in coordination with senior management and identified collaborators
- Perform project execution processes including handling change, safe work plans, standard operating procedures, execution plans, requests for proposals, budgets, tracking critical metrics, project achievements, material take-offs, resource scheduling, cost forecasting, plan development, and supervision of consultants and contractors
- Analyze, identify, and resolve operational and construction issues on projects. Maintain alignment with Quality Control / Quality Assurance procedures and interpret design drawings efficiently
- Track contracts, scopes of work, purchase orders, budget, contract commitments, schedules and communicate progress to management
- Develop an understanding for onsite coordination with different collaborators and optimally connect with them throughout the project planning and execution
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Engineering (mining, geotechnical, civil, mechanical, or metallurgical) with 5 years of confirmed experience
- Experience with design, analysis, and engineering of dams, pumping systems, water conveyance systems, or related structures/systems
- Experience working on mining, heavy civil, or industrial construction projects, schedules, budgets, and leading multiple resources including internal collaborators, external contractors, and consultants
- Knowledge of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management, the Mining Association of Canada’s Tailings Protocols, and/or Canadian Dam Association is an asset
- Proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD Civil3D, and Muk3D Tailings+
- Strong data analysis and interpretation skills with minimal assistance
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities
- Knowledge of and/or experience with of surveying and geomatics would be an asset
- Experience with the installation, deployment, and monitoring of environmental and geotechnical instrumentation and data analysis is considered an asset
- Shown experience in project management and engineering of dams or similar structures
- Able to stay focused on tasks, maintain a positive approach, and exhibit determination
