Senior Electrical Engineer

Teck Alaska Incorporated, Red Dog Operations, one of the world’s largest producers of zinc concentrate, is recruiting for a Senior Electrical Engineer

Reporting to the Team Lead, Reliability and Asset Integrity, the Senior Electrical Engineer is accountable for providing technical support to Red Dog Operations as a member of an Asset Integrity and Reliability team.

Rotation schedule will be two week onsite and two weeks offsite or three weeks onsite and three weeks offsite. 


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Establish and promote the maintenance and continuous improvement of a Safe and Healthy-working environment through personal commitment to the principles of the Red Dog Operations Safety and Health Policy.
  • Know and understand in detail the theory and practice of the electrical and instrumentation engineering discipline and be able to apply this expertise to make significant contributions to Red Dog Operations’ activities.
  • Complete assignments in a professional manner providing necessary measurements, calculations, analyses, interpretation, reporting, recommendations and electrical code interpretations.
  • Provide technical expertise for all electrical related activities, including maintenance, testing, and projects to continually improve energy efficiency, equipment reliability, process effectiveness, and operating and capital costs.
  • Manage and maintain accurate key as-built documentation of the electrical distribution system at site; particularly power single line drawings, arc-flash and coordination models, etc.
  • Manage and maintain accurate key as-built documentation of the instrumentation and process control system at site; particularly P&IDs, DCS programming, etc.
  • Manage and maintain the creation and maintenance of key control and instrumentation documents; particularly PFDs, P&IDs, control narratives, logic diagrams, schematics, loop drawings, instrument data sheets, etc.
  • Manage and maintain the site’s EasyPower arc-flash model, and ensure generated information is communicated in a suitable fashion.
  • Study and recommend energy saving, reliability and sustainability projects for study and execution in the incumbent’s area of competence to improve Red Dog Operations performance.
  • Perform failure analyses on failed equipment, determine root causes, and recommend means to repair and prevent reoccurrence.
  • Manage required various inspection and condition assurance programs to ensure compliance with NETA, IEEE, NFPA and other applicable code requirements.
  • Facilitate process improvements, technical developments and research to positively affect the overall production at Red Dog Operations.
  • Provide verbal and written reports to supervision and Red Dog Operations Senior Management to keep them informed on the progress of the assignments.
  • Coordinate work with that of other members of the Team and the Business Area and cooperate in the exchange of information and expertise.
  • Ensure that projects receive the proper technical information/advice to meet operations goals; become the technical advisor on projects and participate in the leadership role on major projects.
  • Assist in the development of other professionals and technicians, including providing challenging objectives and assignments, coaching and mentoring.
  • Supervise assigned Technologist(s) and Engineer(s) on a daily basis.
  • Take a leadership role in creating, planning and executing projects and other assignments or objectives, working with minimum supervision.
  • Undertake professional development activities to continually develop his/her technical, leadership and management skills.
  • Perform all other related duties as required.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • P.E. designation (Alaska) is required, or must be eligible for P.E. certification in Alaska;
  • Proficient with electrical codes pertaining to operation, maintenance, construction and testing, including NETA, IEEE, NFPA 70 etc.
  • Minimum 10 years’ of work experience in heavy industry, particularly in Medium Voltage power generation and distribution systems;
  • Good troubleshooting ability related to AC/DC drives;
  • Familiarity with control systems
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suites®
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as effective interpersonal and problem solving abilities
  • Supervisory and mentoring experience is a strong advantage
