Senior Mechanical Engineer

Teck Highland Valley Copper Partnership (THVCP) is currently recruiting for the position of Senior Mechanical Engineer.


Reporting to the Chief Projects Engineer in the Site Engineering Department, the Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for design and project management of Capital/Operating projects and Sustaining Service work.  As a leader, you will need to interact with stakeholders from all areas across the mine site.  As such, this position requires a strong leadership and communication skills. 


The successful candidate will also be supervising Junior/Intermediate Engineers/EITs and (1-2) Students, therefore strong coaching and mentoring skills along with extensive design experience are essential.



  • Demonstrate courageous leadership by promoting a safe work environment, ensuring compliance with Teck Health, Safety and Environmental Programs and the BC Mines Act;
  • Work closely with the Operations and Maintenance groups, providing technical direction as required through internal or external resources;
  • Develop project scope, schedule, budget and execution plans;
  • Coordinate and facilitate creation of Appropriation Requests (AR’s) for site improvement and Capital projects;
  • Oversee hourly workers and supervise on-site contractors during construction; 
  • Manage cost and schedule against the baselines and provide regular updates on the project status;
  • Coordinate with stakeholders and ensure that project decisions are communicated effectively;
  • Develop junior team members through coaching, mentoring and recognition.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institution;
  • Registered P.Eng with APEGBC or equivalent;
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience;
  • Strong technical experience to carry out a variety of projects. 
  • Demonstrate administration and strong project management skills;
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Solidworks would be considered an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Project, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Able to work effectively and build relationships with people from across departments, projects;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to be flexible and manage a variety of assignments and situations simultaneously;
  • Operational experience within mining industry work would be considered an asset;
  • Experience in supervising on-site contractors;
  • Must have a minimum of a class 7N valid driver’s license.
