Senior Engineer, Geotechnical

Reporting to the Manager, Geotechnical and Water, the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Geomechanics & Mine Waste is responsible for providing geotechnical expertise towards proactively managing risk and ensuring regulatory and corporate requirements associated with geotechnical mine features and mine waste management are met. The scope includes waste rock stockpiles, open pits, quarries, mine openings, underground mine workings, natural terrain hazards, coarse coal refuse piles, and tailings and water retaining structures.

 

The nature of the work is diversified and will require both strong practical and analytical skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, strong organizational and task prioritization skills, and the flexibility to handle changing priorities. The nature and location of work will require travel across Canada. This role will oversee work related to the management of various mine features and will include training and supervision of personnel and contractors / consultants.

The Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Geomechanics & Mine Waste will lead by example in ensuring that safe and healthy working conditions are maintained, and that workers follow safe work practices and receive adequate training in their specific work tasks to protect their health and safety.

Key Accountabilities

 

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures. 
  • Provide technical guidance and apply expertise with regards to tailings and water retaining structures, coarse coal refuse piles, open pits, quarries, waste rock stockpiles, natural terrain, mine openings and underground mine workings. 
  • Assist in the identification, mitigation, and reduction of geotechnical hazards and risks. 
  • Supervise, train and mentor staff involved in management of geotechnical structures.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements associated with the management of tailings, mine waste, and geotechnical mine structures (surface and underground).
  • Coordinate and review work by external geotechnical consultants. 
  • Ensure implementation of recommendations from geotechnical inspections, reviews and audits.
  • Participate in dialogue with Communities of Interest (regulators, Indigenous peoples, communities, etc.) with respect to risk evaluations, emergency preparedness and responses, and risk mitigation projects. 
  • Oversee short- and long-term projects related to geotechnical structures, including supervision of consultants and contractors. 
  • May act as Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer for one or more closed tailings facilities in Canada. 
  • Participate in annual inspections and periodic internal and external reviews of mine facilities (including underground mine workings, surface mine workings, and tailings storage facilities)
  • Coordinate internal reviews and engage with internal Teck senior expertise in a proactive manner.
  • Prepare deliverables for government and Corporate on activities related to geotechnical mine structures.
  • Participate in annual mine emergency response exercises and risk assessment workshops.
  • Staying current with geotechnical surveillance technology and recommending maintenance and upgrades to monitoring programs based upon that knowledge. 
  • Linking into other geotechnical practitioners across Teck.

Key Competencies

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geological, Geotechnical, Civil or Mining Engineering with specialization in Geotechnical Engineering.
  • A minimum of 8-10 years relevant and progressive geotechnical experience, including a recent geotechnical role at an operating. A Master’s Degree in engineering will count towards this experience and will also be considered an asset.
  • Experience with open pit and/or underground mining or experience with operations, surveillance, and management of tailings facilities / water retaining structures
  • Experience in geotechnical data analysis, geotechnical investigation programs, and project management. 
  • Experience with advanced surveillance methods, inclusive of remote sensing, will be considered an asset.
  • Previous supervisory experience is an asset. 
  • A results-oriented individual who has exceptional organizational, research, planning, writing and communication skills. 
  • Keen to take initiative, act proactively to anticipate needs, and work independently and in a team environment. Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively. 
  • Self-directed individual who enjoys working outdoors and is willing to travel.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office®, GeoExplorer, AutoCAD, various stability and seepage analysis packages, FLAC or similar numerical modelling, and GIS software. 
  • Knowledge of BC’s Health, Safety and Reclamation Code, or other Canadian mining regulations is an asset.
  • Eligible or registered as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).
  • A valid driver’s licence.
  • Ability to demonstrate Teck’s commitment to safety and sustainability.
