Lead, Commercial Optimization

Reporting to the Manager, Marketing, the Lead, Commercial Optimization is responsible for the ongoing support of the Commercial and Business Optimization functionality of the Energy Marketing Team with a focus on customer development, pipeline logistics, and terminalling. The incumbent will backfill commercial duties of Teck Energy’s commercial team and review, develop, and implement short and long-term strategic initiatives to enhance the value of Fort Hills and future projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Represent Teck Energy Marketing, as required, on the Fort Hills Production Planning working group
  • Liaise between Fort Hills production planning and Teck Commercial and Logistics
  • Integrate current and forecasted Fort Hills production with regional logistics capability
  • Manage Teck commercial activities in conjunction with contracted capacity commitments on the Fort Hills regional logistics network, including the Northern Courier, Norlite, Wood Buffalo pipelines, and Gibson terminal
  • Review and budget pipeline tolls
  • Optimize Teck’s contracted capacity and mitigation of Un-utilized Demand Charges (UDC)
  • Provide back-up support when Commercial representatives are away from the office, developing customer logistics and commercial expertise
  • Establish, maintain, and manage relationships with existing and potential customers to monitor ongoing sales activities and record changes in buyers’ plans and perceptions to develop new marketing opportunities
  • Review and develop potential pipeline, terminalling, and rail opportunities to maximize diluent and heavy blend market competiveness. This would include long-term contracted capacity commitments
  • Evaluate and recommend long-term diluent infrastructure commitments to ensure consistent diluent supply
  • Represent Teck on new pipeline capacity working groups, prior to in-service, including TransMountain TMX, TransCanada and Keystone XL, and the Enbridge RSG
  • Assist in the development of a long term Intra-Alberta logistics strategy, as required for diluent and blended bitumen sales, in support of Teck’s future mine development projects

Qualifications:

  • University, or equivalent, degree in Business, Commerce, or a technical field such as Engineering or Geology
  • MBA or equivalent qualification in Business Administration a definite asset
  • Minimum 10 years of Marketing or Commercial experience preferably in petroleum, raw materials, or industrial products
  • Proven negotiating abilities
  • Superior interpersonal, communication, and relationship management skills
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly Excel and PowerPoint
  • Advanced analytical and organizational abilities
  • Ability to operate independently, capable of setting and achieving short and long term goals
