Community Relations Coordinator

Reporting to the Senior Community Relations (CR) Specialist, the Communicty Relations Coordinator is responsible for administering and coordinating activities to ensure the successful implementation of engagement programs associated with mineral exploration in Australia.  

 

As the CR Coordinator, you will be a self-motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and can set objectives, advance priorities, and measure performance. Your role will support project leaders within Australia in obtaining and maintaining a social license to operate.  You will build and maintain stakeholder relationships, support community and social initiatives and proactively identify opportunities for improvement.

 

To be successful, you must have well-honed interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the ability to gauge your audience, and convey a message effectively. 

 

In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with a small dynamic team in Australia to achieve crucial strategic objectives on mineral exploration programs.   The role will also report (in part; 50%) to the Director, HSEC, to assist with the development & implementation of social performance practices and metrics across the globe.  

 

As this role spans both local and global exploration within Teck, previous experience in other exploration jurisdictions (especially North/South America) and fluency in Spanish would be an advantage. 

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Supports and/or undertakes social and operational risk assessment, engagement planning, local employment initiatives, community agreement implementation, reporting, community investment initiatives and project field support.  

  • Works with communities to ensure that exploration activities are respectful of human rights and the community’s connections to environment, including legal requirements. 

  • Assists in responding to grievances and concerns of stakeholders. 

  • Represents the company at external local events and meetings. 

  • Assists in the preparation of monthly reports on activities, issues and concerns utilizing CR reporting tools and systems to meet internal and external requirements. 

  • Observes and implements Teck HSE policies and management systems, as guided by Teck’s Charter of Corporate Responsibility, the Code of Business, Environmental and Health and Safety Practices and the EHS Management Standards. 

  • Understands and adheres to Teck’s philosophy and approach to working with communities, utilizes social management tools & techniques, and proactively identifies community issues/opportunities. 

  • Supports Teck’s global communities team in implementing SMART: e.g. developing Community Engagement Plans, CoI Mapping, Grievance Management 

  • Support the global communities team with high-visibility communication; e.g. community pamphlets and information fliers, press releases or sensitive correspondence is required that needs internal approval  

  • Ownership in developing and maintaining Global Social Responsibility induction materials from existing and future procedures/processes 

  • Support the Director, HSEC in ensuring performance metrics for Social performance are recorded and communicated through dashboards 

  • Support the Director HSEC for review of globally mandated practices: Community aspects of Corporate HSEC Management System, SMART practices and fulfilment of internal Teck reporting. 

 

Qualifications:

 

  • University degree or Diploma, or equivalent work experience in Social Sciences, Sustainability and/or Impact Assessment. 

  • 5 + years’ experience in communities-related or social responsibility work and knowledge of relevant approaches and methodologies. 

  • Previous experience in mineral exploration activities within Australia and/or globally. 

  • Adequate language competency in both English and Spanish is preferred. 

  • Excellent written and inter-personal skills. 

  • Knowledge of historical and contemporary issues affecting Aboriginal people in Australia.
