Senior Corporate Accountant


Reporting to the Supervisor, Corporate Accounting, the Senior Corporate Accountant is responsible for the full cycle accounting of Teck’s corporate ledgers. The position is responsible for advance and complex accounting transactions, treasury accounting, and corporate reporting. Tasks include month-end close and journal entries, balance sheet reconciliation and analysis, internal control compliance, financial statement, and note preparation, and management reporting.


The position is responsible for being a general ledger power user and supports the accounting department by being a go-to person for ERP and G/L use. The position is system savvy and assists team members with HFM analysis, Wdesk, and other advanced accounting tools.  


The position is a key liaison to other departments including Tax, Legal, Treasury, and Consolidation, and is comfortable communicating and working with Managers and Controllers from various departments and locations across Teck with minimal supervision.

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Understand, prepare and process monthly transactions including bank, debt, derivative contracts, intercompany transactions, revaluation of foreign currency balances, pension accruals, fair market value adjustments and other
  • Prepare hedge accounting documentation and hedge effectiveness testing
  • Prepare share-based compensation expense for options and units using equity software (Solium)
  • Prepare share option valuation using Black Scholes Model
  • Prepare quarterly and annual notes to the consolidated financial statements as assigned
  • Liaise with treasury department on changes to debt, derivatives, hedging, foreign exchange contracts, and others
  • Accounting for banking transactions using treasury software (Integrity)
  • Analyze and/or communicate technical accounting issues with Technical Accounting team
  • Analyze and/or communicate consolidation and operation data issues with Consolidation Teams
  • Load monthly ledgers into consolidation software (HFM) and review for accuracy
  • Consolidated foreign exchange analysis
  • Balance sheet account reconciliations
  • Monthly schedules for the financial booklet distributed to senior management
  • Support tax department’s preparation of corporate tax returns and tax audits by providing information as requested
  • Non-consolidated legal entity financial statements of various companies for tax filings
  • Prepare audit working papers for interim and year-end audits; liaise with internal and external auditors
  • Comply with SOX procedures and controls in place
  • Implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy of the financial close process and internal controls environment 
  • Liaise with various sites and other head office departments on ad-hoc projects, including new system implementation and testing
  • Assist with annual budget preparation and forecast as required
  • Assist Supervisor with complex transactions and ad-hoc projects




  • CPA designation
  • 3 to 5 years of post-qualification experience working for a large company in the accounting department (preferably as part of the corporate accounting function)
  • Proficient ledger accountant with strong IFRS and month-end close background
  • Experienced with financial reporting and management reporting
  • SOX and internal control environment experience
  • Ability to work with other departments and understand complex business transactions, provide recommendations and communicate accounting conclusions effectively
  • Strong attention to detail and superior analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks, adapt to changing priorities, and deliver on tight deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and resourcefully with minimal supervision
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Strong computer skills, with expert spreadsheet skills
  • Experience with top-tier ERP and consolidation systems, and other financial reporting software
