Project Geochemist, QAQC

Reporting to the Senior Geochemist and based in Vancouver, BC, the Project Geologist, QAQC is responsible for ensuring all geochemical analyses performed by Teck’s Exploration & Geoscience group are completed according to industry best-practice, are in compliance with NI 43-101 and other reporting requirements, and that Teck’s contracted external laboratories are performing according to QAQC standards and guidelines. This role will provide guidance and support to the global Exploration & Geoscience team and Operations as required to ensure all geochemical programmes are completed according to Teck’s guidelines and procedures.

*This role is located in Vancouver and will have travel as required. 


Responsibilities

 

  • Assist with the development and/or refinement of best practice procedures and guidelines for sample collection, analytical method selection, data validation and storage and ensure these are embedded within the group (organization). Ensure these are in line with industry standards and updated as required to include innovative and emerging practices;
  • Track external laboratory performance (quality of analysis, timeliness, costs) and ensure contractual obligations are being met;
  • Provide internal and external technical laboratory reviews and assist with regular audits;
  • Provide technical oversight and support within the broader geoscience community, related technical service and operational groups in the area of QAQC programs (sample tracking, selection and creation of appropriate standards, project and life of project QAQC analysis and reporting, historical project QAQC etc.);
  • Enable continuous improvement initiatives to automate sample tracking, QAQC workflows;
  • Provide input into geochemical database management and QAQC reporting solutions and ensure data compliance and formalize the data handover process to the Reserve Evaluation Group;
  • Travel to project sites as required to support sampling and QAQC programs including supporting implementation of field-based analytical tools (portable XRF, analytical spectral devices, etc.); and
  • Provide training to project staff in QAQC standards and data interpretation across exploration, projects and operations as required. 

 

Qualifications & Experience

 

  • B.Sc. in Geochemistry or a related discipline, with a preference for a post graduate degree;
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience;
  • Strong knowledge of analytical techniques and experience dealing with internal and/or external laboratories to ensure excellence in execution. Experience working in a commercial analytical laboratory would be an asset;
  • Application of data validation for resource estimation, familiarity with NI 43-101 compliance requirements and QA/QC is critical to the role;
  • Knowledge of SQL and experience with programming languages such as Python or R would be beneficial; and
  • Strong written and oral English skills are required including advanced writing, presentation and interpersonal and leadership skills. Spanish language skills are an asset.
