The Microbiologist position will support Teck’s work in the growing field of microbiology-based mining applications. Reporting to the Senior Microbiologist at Technical Services Trail,  the Microbiologist will be responsible for supporting Teck’s efforts to understand, study and apply microbiology within our business, including both environmental and mineral processing applications. In addition, they will act as a resource within the Technical Services Group and help guide and execute various applied research initiatives.


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Advance microbiology-based projects for water treatment, environmental management, and other processing challenges.
  • Strong technical skills with the ability to design and direct applied research efforts to better understand the organisms and mechanisms involved in mining-specific microbiology applications.
  • Interact with other Teck business units and technical fields to prepare various studies.
  • Keep abreast of new technologies and their potential application and impact on the company.


  • Bachelor or Master of Science in an applicable Biological Science/Engineering program.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a research laboratory setting or similar.
  • Familiarity with aseptic techniques, environmental sampling methods, biosafety programs, microscopy, molecular biology techniques, and bioinformatics.
  • Experience conducting applied research programs is desired, ideally with an industrial focus.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Experience with mycology, anaerobic digestion, or synthetic biology would be considered an asset.
  • Practical field experience in mine sites or comparable environments would be considered an asset.
