Process Safety Engineer

Reporting to the Superintendent, Risk and Process Safety, the Process Safety Engineer provides process safety support to ensure that all high-risk activities, operational processes, and business risks (environmental, bodily injury, and internal/external conditions that impact the business), are identified proactively and are subjected to timely management controls and verification.
The Process Safety Engineer supports the Superintendent for providing site-wide guidance, training and expertise on risk management, risk assessment (including Process Hazard Assessments), controls and control verification effectiveness, auditing and maintaining the effectiveness of the Risk Management, Process Safety Management and Management of Change (MoC) process.
Responsibilities:
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Advise operations of process safety risks and hazards associated with processes, equipment and day-to-day operations
- Conduct process safety reviews, process safety-related studies & analyses, and support the development of related control measures for projects
- Provide advice and recommendations on the applicability and interpretation of both internal and external safety guidelines and standards
- Provide training, compliance control monitoring, and continuous improvement for the site wide Management of Change (MoC) process
- Support operating site’s Risk Management Process and provide technical support to safety and regulatory audits
- Facilitate risk assessments such as HAZIDs (Hazard Identification), HAZOPs, and BowTie
- Train new PHA Facilitators and guide the development of a reliable Risk Management and PHA practice across all Business Units
- Support governance of process safety and risk management processes, standards, and performance by developing and reporting key performance indicators, trending and analyzing incidents and other data, participating in audits and other assurance activities
- Support the project development process by helping to ensure best practices are employed for hazard identification and risk management, inherently safer design principles, disciplined use of standards and effective handover to operations
- Provide process safety knowledge for incident investigations, help teams to identify root causes, effective and sustainable corrective actions and relevant lessons learned that can be leveraged across the organization
- Develop and deliver resources to enhance process safety knowledge, hazard awareness, foster a sense of chronic unease, and support continuous learning
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering or similar
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (APEGBC)
- 5+ years’ experience in processing environment with experience working in facilities with a Process Safety Management (PSM) Standard (OSHA, CSA, etc)
- Required experience in complex metallurgy or chemical systems
